chap up the road from me has a diesel wj 3.1 diesel that is slow to change up from cold has been told cleaning filter will fix it ?
so is the filter replaceable and i am thinking that fluid plus filter change wont hurt but probably wont fix it
-
When mine was playing up me and panic did fluids and there is a filter as well.
Won't hurt as first port of call. Could be early signs of tps failure though. This is ultimatley what mine needed.
-
this is my thinking
so i assume wj runs fancy fluid ? is the 3.1 the one with no dipstick on the tranny ?
-
I changed the oil and filter on a 5 speed auto a couple of years ago. It had 185,000 miles on it and was jolting every now and again between 2 particular gears.
The filter (from memory it was more of a strainer), was spotless and you'd be hard pushed to tell the old oil from the new.
Got it all back together and surprise surprise - no difference.
My thoughts now are, if there's that much shite floating around in there to block up the filter, it's probably time for a replacement box anyway.

Indeed fancy fluid, you have to measure on the fill with a rather large syringe type of thing.
-
as suspected then i wonder if lightys do the filter and fluid as the owner wants to try it as first cheap option .................. wishfull thinkin i reckon
-
Dextron 3 aint cheap.
-
Dexron 3 or confirm whatever it needs & how much, you want me to get a price off local oil man ?
-
the V8 was ATF4 from memory, but Jeep were the cheapest place I could find.
-
Indeed main dealer will be the best option for the required parts/oils.
-
It's a 44RE. It uses ATF+4 and has a dipstick.
-
Car makers issue licenses so that the the mainstream oil companies can make compatible oils.
Dexron is GM's license and ATF+4 is Chrysler's.
There's a list of brands here:

-
Dexron is not compatible with ATF+4, it has different properties, not worth the risk when you're trying to solve a problem.
-
thanks mike nearly pmd ya but thought info was more use on the open forum
-
Before I did my last autobox oil change I did a fair amount of research for compatibility issues.
Before you put ATF+4 in your WJ you may want to read this.

Apparently the additives in ATF+4 have been found to attack the oil seals in early Mercedes/Chrysler boxes
-
Have you looked at Opie oils?
Alway seem to offer good prices and I have used them many times

It's not a Mercedes box, it's a Chrysler 44RE, a decendant of the Torqueflite.

Just done mine a few weeks ago AFT+4 oil and changed filter as part of regular mantanice. If I remember correctly it should be done every 30K
the most important part is not to over fill. It is a messy job dropping the pan and you will need new pan seal.
It is probably well over due a transmission filter change but I don't think it will sort out the problem.
