It's come at a good price, stuck lifter so engine does not sound great, but over all its a good basis for a project truck... Don't think that bumper will be on there long... "Chrome won't get you home" 8274 will be much more use I feel...
Looking at a 4" Rough Country lift kit and using front and rear lower flexi arms like I had on the front of the Cherokee, Then of course the swampers will fit, prob gunna junk the bead lockers as they never worked with the narrow swampers.
As ever more details to follow...
Happy days, Maf
-
lots of saleable shit on that
-
Looks cool - I'll keep an eye out for you. :003:
-
Engine stripped and found number two piston cracked, all of the oil ways to the scrapper rings were blocked/almost blocked.
New rings, big ends, water pump and radiator, now sounds very sweet and getting lots of gentle road miles on.
Next up some protection, rock sliders, challenge wings and roll cage. Looking at a crew cab, will prob get 4" rough country kit with front and rear lower flexi arms. So that 34" swampers will sneak on nicely
8274 going on front, also have a superwinch that may go on the back.
Have got Aussie locker for front, might treat myself for Christmas to one for the rear :)
-
Stripped off flared arches etc and got both rock sliders on, mounted them nice and high, front and rear will tie in to this and then a roll cage as well...

Three braces tie in nicely...

Stripped off chrome and placed tray on, should work out good, looks awesome...
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2Ftray.jpg&hash=14d466eeb6683f21698a457c9a51bded4bd27c6e)
-
Looks like thats gonna be a proper weapon when finnished fella, Nice work!!
-
Is it having a cage??
-
Yes cage is on the cards, all will tie into the rock sliders, front wings are being made at the moment, one side done.
Waiting to see what roof I will get, half top or cut up a hard top to make a crew cab.
Once that's all done then will look into lift kit.
-
Keep the pictures coming mate...
-
Just one pic at mo...
Progress on tube wings... still being made so just a pic to show the basic out line, note original three bolt mounting onto front panel has been replicated, very pleased :icon_biggrin: :icon_super:

-

-
:hysterical: u joinin that club in birtys after all Will
-
high liners rule :icon_super:
Bugger all room under the hood tho........
Currently using today to bend steel and try and fit 2 batteries in space that is tight for one :jpshakehead:
-
Not looking for monster size tyres or lift, so will be fine as is. Truck will also be used for lanes and some road miles.
Hopefully should have some more progress and pics towards the end of the week.
-
highlining isn't for monster tyres or lift....its for uptravel, more uptravel on a lower cog truck makes for better offroadyness just ask mr big_patrol
-

Or just fit lockers and who cares about articulation? Thanks for your input but highlining is more work that I don't need to do, in the events I've been using Cherokee's with angle grinder. Wrangler will be what I need, and fine.
-
go Maf :icon_super:
do unto others willo :greggmo:
-
just trying to help :banghead:

just trying to help :banghead:
Don't take it personal!! Historically Maf beats the shiet out of things and grace is the last thing on his mind.
-
just trying to help :banghead:
me to :003:
-
Yeah, but that was in £200 Cherokee's, this time protection is the first thing getting done... more pics on progress...
Front wings really taking shape now, rear bumper and rear arch protection next on the list...
Also looked at winch position, the flat plate will be welded on to the chassis rails, then the tray bolted to that, will need to stick out a little... 8274 with bow 1 motor
Waiting on a roof that can be cut to suit then the roll cage.

Happy days...

My cj is gettin those fenders :icon_super:
-
do like the way you have incorporated the original inner wing and some of the top, not an option open to me on Tonka as they had to much rot on inner and outer but will keep in mind for yella if we ever get around to starting the rebuild
-
If you need to change the steering box, just remember its a whole lot easier without a winch plate in situ.
-

Thanks, was mainly done this way for ease of the build, the aim is to get the protection we need easily and with what we had to hand, so far it's three days build time and only £35 for pipe, everything else has been to hand from previous works or what Toby has picked up from the scrap pile, his garage is near a breakers yard/weigh bridge and anything interesting comes in he gets a shout...
Thanks for winch plate/steering box info, we have to weld it on, but a 9" grinder will soon have it off if needed, winch tray will be bolted so that can be easily removed if required.
Should have some more pics towards the end of next week....
Cheers Maf

hmmm you sure you are not going all renegade?

Haha, its a Warn 8274, personally I think its the best winch for the job, fast, strong, easy to rebuild/improve, spares easy to get.
Running wide drum and less rope so doesn't get bunched up.
Running Bow 1 motor for reliable set up over speed, have heard faster motors can burn out when loaded right up.
Rebuilt it earlier this year and shake down over 4 events, happy days.
-
Roof has arrived :greggmo:

Will cut up and make crew cab...

I might to do the same...
-
I might to do the same...
Get on! Here's some food for thought...
Had a good few hours at Toby's workshop and really taking shape now...
Toby worked on rear bumper, I cut up new roof, got old one off, cleared out rear tub, chopped off rear part of internal roll cage, rear tub is really clean, happy days....
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2821.jpg&hash=f5ee958c2213ed7e84172f1f75575896ab6b0b0c)

Cut rear tub corners off, protection will flow these lines...
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2820.jpg&hash=669d4d01cbbec3c68e41d7314de52e1447c73650)
Rear arch chopped out...

Rear bumper (upside down) whilst Tobster welds up angles...

Roof will (of course be painted)... but check the redneckness out of it all...

-

Thanks! I'll let Toby know, they are really strong and set with tyres on full lock so if your wedged on a tree you can put full lock on and drive off :icon_winkle:
Roll cage will be in place before proper event, needed to lose rear section of it to plan what we are going to...
BD... no point hanging around :icon_winkle:crack on I reckon...
Really pleased with it, been messing around with lots of Cherokee's and this build is the culmination of idea's and what I need for the events/terrain that we have around here... happy days...
-
Rear bumper, with two recovery points done...

sorry, should have said "pulled off" :hysterical:

Yeah!! Throw it out the side, it just gets in the way when it flexes like a teen.......

i realy like this build cos for once your truck does not look like it has just left the scene of a fatal rta
-
The recovery eye's look very strong, I like them.
-

Thanks... I've wanted a TJ for a project for ages and have ended up with ebay purchases that are either too good or too much work... I'll hold my hands up to punishing Cherokee's, mostly they have been at the end of their lives, (£200) when I got them, I just pushed them a little that's all and kept them going a little longer than they would have done :icon_biggrin:
Don't worry exhaust will be going else where... hoping to get it ready enough for a shake down on Sunday with CLCC, then more work to do...
Last Cherokee when it met its maker...

The recovery eye's look very strong, I like them.
Thanks, I didn't even ask for them, Toby just cracked on and did them, I'm pretty sure you could pull a house down with them :icon_super:

Loving this thread... :pop:

Loving this thread... :pop:
Thanks, here is today's progress... more tomorrow :greggmo:
Rear bumper all sorted now, we decided to make a tool for bending 90mm box section and it worked real good... the rear arch protection will flow into this...
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2837.jpg&hash=42d72fb43829fa19b8a9082239e38b659714d54d)
Okay, so this is how it was really done, again, another excellent piece of frabrication by Toby...
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2838.jpg&hash=8d65b6dcd87cb5b10b690e228a4ac549ed752a0d)
Now here is a little test... Can you see the bumper?
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2840.jpg&hash=5f2cd5461053a5b2e19308c48262bb904f3bd4bc)
Can you still see the bumper?
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2841.jpg&hash=6d80b59f7070c2fc54fec326085aeb2beb2c9445)
We also tried the swampers on, and there is enough room without a lift kit, not saying I wont fit one, as not that flexi... want to get lockers, so who cares haha.
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi439.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq119%2Fpropref%2FIMG_2836-1.jpg&hash=738ab899dec2cf99fbcc1f6830e4ccbea685002d)

Really cracking on and hopefully we can make the CLCC day on Sunday, got crapy stuff like number plates and indicators sorted today, tomorrow will be full on A team mode for pulling it out of the bag... Happy days...
-
looooking very good maf :greggmo:
-
Had my 8274 there for a while......you will be fine off road no probs but if ya doing motorways and sitting at 60 odd you will find things a bit hotter than you would like.....
but depends on the amount of fins that aren't fooked on your rad....... Fitted an aux 16" fan to help keep it down....
just my 2 cents as usual......
-
looooking very good maf :greggmo:
Big thanks, I'll pass that on to Toby, He's just started out, young lad with cracking skills and really doing a great job, happy days.

Thanks for input, I've just had the motor rebuilt, new heavy duty core rad and water pump, runs cooler now, so hopefully will be okay with 8274 in the way, but will fit electric fan to help and also when in deep water better to junk mechanical fan as it just dumps water over leads etc...
-
Todays progress, got lots done and ready (ish) for CLCC event tomorrow, thankfully just a 'play day'...
Looking fatter now... no wider than stock though... just tougher arches...

nope, small lift, lockers, winches front and rear, flat skid, cage, will go anywhere you want it :icon_winkle:
-
I'm running 34" Swampers for competitions and 31" STT's for laning, no clearance issues (might already have a 2" lift on? But prob just the amount of clearance we've created). Lanes and sites are often tight and small down here, so will keep Jeep as small as poss. Plus some clubs/sites have 35" max rule.
Will stick with one winch for now, but make cage strong enough so rope can go over the top for a rear pull, a 2nd winch will put me in the top class and your up against £10K+ trucks then.
Cage is the next item to be made & fitted. Will fit lockers (I have one for the front so will throw that in for now). I have some underneath protection to go on.
-
never put a new sticker on a windscreen, asking for trouble :hysterical:
-
Nice JK, I've got a front winch bumper and a rubicrawler here ready for when the right one pops up
-
TJ back out of hibernation, new screen fitted, winch motor arrived, cage being made first week of feb, will sneak some lanes in and more road miles as engine only a few hundred miles since rebuild.
Have fitted windjammer from YJ to help keep warm, more snow on the way, even in Cornwall!
Oh and my 2001 Cherokee is finally on the road, boy ain't those heated seats the best?
Happy days! Maf
-
do you still want5 this carrier :017: good to see another jeep out there competing....
-
I hadn't realised you had a new XJ! Is that the new daily driver??
-
do you still want5 this carrier :017: good to see another jeep out there competing....
Yes please. Looking for to 2013 season, first event next month, will hopefully take part in a few other clubs events as well.
Yeah the 2001 XJ is my daily ride, although will split between TJ as more miles needed on engine :)
-
Work has started again, moved into new garage with 5 ramps, so not much Jeep time. New winch motor, screen (complete with gnarlylaners stick) fitted, wet carpets removed and ditched. Full oils change tomorrow, then cage, then paint.
Really looking forward to this years punch hunt series, wanted a coiler for 5 years!
Happy days Maf

F.S.U. baby :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super:
Yeah you know it makes sense, haha.
Okay, had some quality Jeep time and got the front (Aussie) locker in, was kinda dreading this as when I first fitted it, 'twas a mare. Thankfully all went well, couple of hours later and all ready to roll.
Just been laning to test, awesome, just near my house are four lanes, one very gnarly and washed out with lose rocks, trees etc, steep lane with big holes, normally you gotta use a little/a lot of welly to get up this lane, front locker just found traction and did the whole thing at 1100 revs or under.
Then a soft muddy incline, re found a lane that I'd forgotten about/ was blocked with a fallen tree a few years ago and the mud was thick enough to render the steering wheel useless. Again awesome, will order locker for rear this week :)
Next up throttle spacer and stronger yoke/prop joints. Then cage, then paint.
Future will be regear, thinking of going 4.88 over 4.56 that I've used before.
Then I have to decide on a lift kit, technically we have no issues even with 34" swampers. But need more flex to keep tyres on deck. I'm thinking 2" lift with lower flexi arms front and rear, I don't want a 4" lift as will be very tall in the lanes, we have a lot of small tight (ooer) ones down here. Will prob go with rough country from Dave at llama 4x4, as ever though all suggestions welcome, there is a budget to it and llama can do a lift kit with flexi arms for £650 delivered

Re gear kit (4.88:1) and rear Aussie locker on the way from the states...
Toby has cracked on with protection, couple of pics as of this morning...
Front hoop all made up, being welded today...

Continued with same size tube, its for protecting the cab and not for end over end roll over certain death, will also be used for side pulls and fingers crossed up and over rear pull.
Also having tube to protect winch, happy days :)
-
Looking good :greggmo:
Aussie lockers are awesome. Put one in my 3.2 V6 trooper. Gave it some serious stick and it never gave up. Completely changed the truck to drive as well. As long as you have the CV's/UJ's to take it, very much worth the investment!
-
Toby sneaked in his winch last Saturday afternoon before the event on Sunday.
Centre winch can also pull rear wards, of course both side ways and if we need a stronger/quicker rear pull we can throw the 8274 rope out the back as well.
Happy days, Maf

I still have some lift springs if you are interested?

They may have originally been a bit taller than you wanted to go but now they are nice and soft. Could be ideal for your application

Thanks again Maf

haha, best not to have a cat on your car though eh :icon_winkle:
Lucky the cat is tee total, :icon_biggrin:

Had a couple of ours on the Jeep today (in between time wasters... got an old Merc for sale, customers chatting all last night through email... they turn up dead exicted, went for a drive, then came back still looking and chatting to each other about it, then they said they needed an estate WTF!)
Anyway, Davey and I got the Talon centre winch in, spare wheel on cage, will take off when we get to events so we can still rear pull with the front winch... also sorted out where ground anchor lives and other stuff like adjust hand brake...
So pretty much ready for next weekend's punch hunt in SE Cornwall, Happy days...

After the teething troubles on the last punch hunt it appeared we had fueling issues as no engine light on and zero fuel pressure after the engine was running a few minutes...
Decided time to put the fuel tank in the tub to save damage and less to get caught up on, thankfully fits in lovely and will modify the old metal bash plate to hold the tank in nice then mount the storage boxes above it, replaced fuel pump and the filter/regulator... still cutting out, CPS looks to be the issue, which when it plays up it kills the fuel supply, but weird how no engine light came on as it does easily on other items that we found when fitting replacement engine and hadn't made good connections...
Also took rear diff out to re gear but sadly wrong ring & pinion, learning curve on HD Dana 44 axle has been steep, but after half a day I understand the axle and how to strip it... slide hammer needed for one of the half shafts and the rear diff needed the centre winch in the end....
This ramp is set up wide for 4x4's... :)

Good shout, I have a proper good clamp, will try that next time, centre winch worked a treat though... had to hammer the carrier back in though :icon_sad:
Fitted CPS and the Wrangler is all happy days again :)
Next up is the exhaust manifold and banks monster (straight through) exhaust, old exhaust is hanging and decided to upgrade, will breath better and even more low down torque, also going to look at modifying the CPS so we can advance the timing, again giving better throttle responce and smoother low down power...there is even a rolling road near our garage :icon_winkle: :icon_super:
Manifold has flexi pipes for end two cylinders to avoid extra stress on joints and therefore wont crack like other stock/cheap aftermarket ones do...

Got the tank all secure in the tub, used the original tank protection and straps, then I mounted the two boxes above the tank and managed to sneak a small ammo box next to them, can carry some small spares, shackes, snatch blocks and winch blanket in there, freeing up room in the other two...

Alloy conducts heat real good and the fans pull off proper hot air, think a bonnet scoup/vent needed as the fans will just warm the engine up...
Fingers crossed that is my cooling issues sorted... :)

Thats real nice, but as i found out this weekend, really the rad needs to go in the back

I concur ..

Thats real nice, but as i found out this weekend, really the rad needs to go in the back
Would love to but too much other stuff going on in the back... what happened with yours?
-
TJ back out of hibernation, had nothing but trouble last season and lost the Jeep love... thankfully didn't sell everything of and throw the towel in... winches all serviced, tyres resealed, 2 hours of pressure washing and a shake down, brake pipes to replace this week then fingers crossed Punch hunt on the 20th July...
Have also fitted front rad fan so three in total, would be nice to stay cool! Think bonnet vents are next on the list... and want to get rear locker in
-
Recent stuck clutch plate has now been freed and cleaned.... also the release bearing was FUBAR, would have been a future problem...
Took just 45 mins to get the motor moved forward to access the clutch, refitting a little longer, went well though
