Title: Changing CJ diff oil - can I use suck pump in stead of removing covers
Post by: Dutch on December 11, 2012, 10:25:21 AM
Gents,

I just saw one of these in our workshop and had a thought ........ :017:
[attachment=1]

CJ is due for some winter TLC but I find removing and then resealing the diff covers a bit daunting .... I know walk in the park for you lot ....

If the sucker pipe is small enough could I suck out through the filler hole and then refill ? do I need to add that special stuff....whatsits ??

Muchas gracias.

By sucking it out you won't be able to get all of the old oil out I don't think.

or any of the nasty grunge that sits at the bottom, and is usually gritty and may have small metal particles in it.....
RTV or black gasket and a skeleton gun are your friend :icon_super:

That's what I done on the xj, but as said, you'll not get all the oil of cack out but I guess it's ok for a quick change to cover over the winter.

Hey,

Defo worth taking covers off, it really is easy to do, you can also then get a rag in the bottom of the axle and wipe any gunge out, you can of course see any bits of metal and check the inside of the covers as they can rust, plus if someone has put to much sealant that might be in there as well.

Call if you need a walk through guide...

Cheers Maf

Dutch it'll take frigging ages....and you'll need to warm up the oil first by either taking it for a drive or light a fire under it....and then it will take frigging ages. those suckers are great for engine oil changes..not so great for cold gloopy ep90 filled diffs

Changed my front and rear oils today, only took an hour and boy did the rear need it (brown) so water must have got in somewhere. Will give it another change in a month to see what it looks like.

Dutch using a pump is hassle IMHO. Get yourself a tube of RTV Silocone a 13mm and some diff oil  :icon_super:

No don't think so as CJ's don't have a LSD?

Any probs, just call, seriously after you've done it, you'll be happy, some 4x4's have a drain plug and at first I wondered why Jeep went this route, but it is about having a look and getting all the crap out possible, tis the best way....

I know it may sound anal but remember a bit of PTFE tape for the sump plug.

What can I say, in a moment of weakness I saw a shameless cheap opportunity & took it  :003:

I feel cheap n dirty  :icon_redface:

Top tip though as viewed at MJS on a good few occasions when mine has been done, Dont be scared to use plenty of sealer  :icon_winkle:
