As some of you may know, I am on the look out for a Wrangler TJ, no really? yes honestly
I am dead set on getting an auto so changing gear will be one less thing to have to worry about when tackling obsticles that need driving attention instead of changing gear attention as well. Hey I am a novice at the end of the day and need all the help I can get!
But
Gazjeep is trying his hardest to get me into a manual as they need less mods to make them safe off roading (or something like that)
So you knowledgeable Birty's, your opinions please.

In a Manual, you look at an obstacle and decide what gear you are going to tackle it in. You put your beast in that gear and have a go. You can only lock and auto box in 1st gear, if you choose 2nd, then it can use 1st or 2nd, with 3rd it can use the first three gears.
If you go in some wet stuff and the engine stops, you can put a manual in gear and turn the starter in a vain hope of keeping your feet dry.
Manual gearboxes don't overheat.
1st in a manual us usually a lower gearing than 1st in an auto (Slower, more controlled hill decents)
When (Not if) your handbrake stops working from mud, you can shove a manual in gear on a fairly steep incline and it'll hold your beast without damaging anything. You should not hold you beast on a hill in Park.
There's just a few reasons I can think of. Unless you only have one leg :)

I love the XJ auto for nearly everything except steep descents. However the TJ auto boxes are different and possibly a bit more prone to problems.

The "mod" he is worried about is the gearbox breather......only an issue if you go wading!!

As a novice, the auto would be a good choice.
And you can shift an auto through the gears if you need to.
And you dont have to drive throu deep water if ya dont want to.
And its about time you bloody had one :!: :brows:

The 4-speed auto (2002 on?) doesn't have the same problem as the breather is in a sensible position, and can be easily extended. On the earlier 3-speed it's worth getting the mod done (gearbox on bench job) if you want to wade, or just avoid deep water. I'm sure you'll find the auto makes it a lot easier to concentrate on your line, and other stuff that's going on. Apparently, autos are becoming more popular with the military for that reason.
