Title: SYE needed or longer prop???
Post by: Charl1e on January 29, 2013, 03:35:34 PM
I'm going to be adding a few inches to my current 3.5 inch lift upto 5.5-6.5"
Do I need a SYE or can I just fit a custom propshaft instead???
Any thoughts???

Some say you should be using an SYE anyway. But if your going that hight then it would be the best way to go.

Don't mean to sound blonde, but what exactly does a SYE do apart from make the prop longer is it???
At the moment I have a 1" drop kit to stop the vibrations, I thought a longer prop would be easier than having to chop bits off the t case & drill bits etc.

SYE "reduces" the gap to the rear axle thus allowing more movement to the articulation!!!

Though getting rid of slip yok would mean you need a longer prop as you cut off half of the splined shaft from the TC to fit SYE :017:

you need a new prop any way
A telescopic prop not a fixed one as the slip yoke will not be there to allow the axle to move up and down

Ah right, so it's not as simple as a longer prop then  :011:
Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent one (that's not worth more than my xj)???

Only the cheap sye kits will have cut, chop and drill the stock shaft. Any of the good ones will include a new output shaft that is much larger and stronger then stock and will have a yoke or flange to match.

I have a JB Conversions kit and have never had trouble.

And yes it does suck when you break the stock output shaft and all the transfer case oil drops on the ground.

I have a Rubicon Express 'hack n tap' SYE kit and modified front propshaft fitted to it. Fitting a SYE means you can fit a prop with a double cardan joint (like your front prop has near the transfer case) and a slip joint in the prop (also like your front prop). This copes with the increased angles on a lifted Jeep much better than correcting angles and lengthening a 'standard' rear prop.

I have to add that going to 5"+ of lift from where you are now involves quite a lot of angle correcting. If you haven't got an adjustable trackbar I'd budget for that plus a new bracket on the body side of it to drop it a bit and match the drop with a dropped pitman arm for the steering box. Longer brakelines front and back, move the handbrake cable bracket and/or get longer cables. Don't look at your front control arm angle once lifted or you'll start pricing up longarm kits and that WILL be more than the Jeep is worth.

Have fun  :003:

I'm looking at a long arm kit from IRO the guys seem pretty helpful. I've put aside a budget for adjustable arms, trackbar and pitman arm bits aswell. I don't plan on selling my xj or getting rid of as its low mileage and is having LPG at the end if the month. So I guess a hack n tap is the way forward then.

If you are going to make the commitment Charlie rather than sniff the shiet look at Clayton he does a long arm that works!!!

The longarm kit that I put on my XJ from Rough Country was well made and flexed very well. It was easy to install aswell I had the whole lot fitted in about 3 hours.

Not all long arm setups are the same - there are y arms, 3 link , and 4 link. Probably makes little difference but thought I'd point it out. I have the Full Traction kit which is a 4 link.
