Afternoon!
You've all kindly helped me with a couple of minor faults on my own '99 4.0 GC in the past and for that I am eternally grateful! However, my sister is having some problems with her GC which have been on going for a while and I'm hoping you may be able to help diagnose the problem.
The car is a 2.7 Diesel and the problem is with gear selection. She puts the car into drive and pulls away, but the car doesn't change from first gear for quite some time. It may change up to second or third at some point - but if she then comes to a standstill, the gearbox doesn't go back to first when she goes to pull away again, instead staying in the last used gear.
She was about to get a reconditioned 'box but I'm sure it can't be that; I read that transmission problems are reasonably common on these models. Wonder if anyone here can point me in the right direction to start with?
Much appreciated as always.
Cheers, Richard.

Hi,
have a peek at my post on "Service Bulletin". Could be relevant, particularly if it was cold when this happened.
Cheers

Thanks Tony - I've just had a read. Very interesting! Although it's been going on for some time now, I suspect it may not be this; but worth checking out. Cheers!

Valve body FUBAR, believe they can be purchased as exchange units for about £600gbp one could try changing the oil and filter first if you want to throw you're dice at it.

Could the Transmission Control Module be at fault?

I saw something on the web about the valve body that IoM refers to, apparently the bores for the control pistons wear causing the gear changes to judder and lock into certain gears on this model gearbox, they provided a service to bore them out and insert linings made from a more resilient metal.
Tried searching for it to post on here for you, couldn't find it but run into this instead, it’s for a Merc but it’s the same NAG 1 box they put in the Diesel GC’s. There's also other posts on their site with relevant info.

Have you tried to call up any codes on the dash?
My mate had his 04 2.7CRD stick in limp home mode and the only code he got up was P0720 (I Think!) this only allows the use of 2nd and R (in the early days, he could con the gearbox to change up - but it eventually went into permanent Limp Home Mode.
Check 3 things:-
1 Any fault codes?
2 When the ignition is switched on - do the mimic lights illuminate alongside the gearlever ( P,R,N,D and the orange id)?
3 When R is selected - do your reversing lights illuminate?
