				About to attempt my first 4.0 transplant. Anything you can tell me to make it go a little smoother or things to watch out for appreciated. Its a '97 facelift xj and the new lump is out of a '96 grand cherokee

				Swap all the pulley related bits over while it's out.

				are there any special tools needed or any particularly awkward bits to be aware of ?

				I found it easier to remove the engine gearbox complete getting past the engine mount bracket was a pain on my own .. 
 
 there are two torq bolts on top of the gearbox connecting the engine and box 10mm i think
