My 1978 CJ-5 is incomplete and would need a massive amount of work / money spending to rebuild as original.
Taking measurments it would seem that Series (leaf spring) Land Rover axles are almost a "bolt on" fit.
I've had numerous Land Rovers so don't have a problem with the axles (other than oil leaks
).
Rear diff is offset to one side so that would also allow me to use a Range Rover transfer box and 5 speed gearbox so I find it tempting.
Anyone tried them ?

Bastardising a Jeep. Is that allowed?

Think you should go up to the bathroom, chew a little soap and wash that mouth out....
LR parts on a Jeep!!!

I've given up on Land Rovers.
I'd rebuild the Jeep as original if I had the parts.
So much is missing that it's not feasible without spending a fortune.
I've posted loads of wanted adverts for the missing parts and have either had no responce or offers wanting silly amount.
At least using alternative parts will keep the Jeep on the road instead of being scrapped.
If someone wants to sell me a COMPLETE scrap CJ-5 with rotten chassis and body for peanuts ie the same price I'd pay for a scrap Land Rover then I'll rebuild as standard otherwise I'm afraid I have no option other than to use whatever I can find within my budget.
The Jeep was up for sale for ages with no one interested. Jeep "enthusiasts" had looked at it but none "put their money where their mouth is" and the seller was considering removing axles and taking rest to tip !
One thing I hate about Land Rover groups is the blinkered views on other manufacturers products. I was hoping the same didn't apply to Jeep owners but it would seem I was wrong

Hey Paul
You go on a Landy forum, they rip Jeeps and Pajs etc, go on a Paj forum and Landy's and Jeeps get ripped. Same on Jeep Forums, don't take it to heart mate.
If thats the only way to get it on the road, then good luck, I wouldn't have the first clue about putting Landy Axles on a Jeep (Come to think of it, Probably wouldn't have a clue putting Jeep axles on a jeep!), let alone putting a Rangie box in too! Are you looking at putting a LR / RR engine in too?

hey paul ignore ed he is a gobby twat. think he was only playin. i very much doubt wether anyone here has done anything along the lines of what you are sayin. might be just as cheap to find some jeep axles though mate.
-
You type too slow you old git :)
-
Considered trooper or frontera rear axles? There cheap and havr a centered diff, might be easier than trying to swap transfer boxes.
-
Well done Edna.
(He's OK really Paul......just takes some getting used to!
A few 'mixed race' trucks and you never no, we all might start getting on with each other!.
Nah.............it'll never happen!

BillWestly has a CJ/Discovery hybrid - running Jeep body and 200TDi engine, box and axles (I think!). He's had the beastie for a while now, so could probably comment on the pros and cons. Always a bit of a laugh as no-one seems sure whether its a Landy pretending to be a Jeep or vice-versa... I have his email address somewhere if you want I can contact him for you?
