Title: WANTED ENGINE: TJ Wrangler 4 litre 1997 dizzy type, Manual box...
Post by: Green Jeep on March 13, 2013, 08:34:58 PM
Think I have serious issues with the engine on my punch hunt truck... went out laning yesterday since it was my birthday...

...oil pressure dropping at low revs, then wouldn't climb until 2000 revs, then smoking, pulled No 2 plug out, oiled up, cleaned and swapped number 4 and 2 over, smoking stopped limped home on misfiring engine... engine pushing oil out of the rocker box gskt and breathing heavy.

Annoying as had new rings and bearings and cleaned through 1000 miles ago  :icon_sad:

Might need a new engine and whilst I'm there prob change the clutch as well, if anyone can help that would be great, such a shame as I've weighed in loads of these engines, time for a  :icon_jook: I think. Will try and drop sump and see if I can see why the oil pressure has dropped, wonder if too much sealant has collected on the oil feed pick up. Are the oil pumps known for failure and if they do go do they just fail or as my oil pressure has slowly drop off?

Thanks in advance Maf

Shoot Maf, what a bummer.  After all the work you've done to that block.

I think postage from Holland will be a killer  :003:

Hope you find one soon.

I have a clutch sitting on the garage floor collecting dust, pulled from my 97TJ 4.0L a couple of months back. PM me if interested and I'll send you a pic.

Possible good news... smoking is fuel related....

... two injectors not working.... fingers crossed....

Its getting better news...

...compression check, all good 150/170 apart from No 2 at 120, it didn't get higher when we did a wet test, no damage through bore camera, fitted new plugs and runs sweet, alll injectors now working, suspect valve, which lines up as that was the piston that was cracked through oil starvation and I presume extreme heat. I have a spare head so I can prep one, easy job to switch  :icon_biggrin:

Gunna drop the sump tomorrow and check pick up as possible low oil pressure, but that could be a faulty gauge, common, or sender unit, not so common, both of which I can swap from my XJ Cherokee and try... :icon_super:

Looking forward to seeing more info on that....

Is there any improvements that can be done to improve the flow of 4 litre heads? Remember back in the day working on A series Mini heads...

Anyone done a performance camshaft swap?  :icon_super:

up to you but how can anyone not be happy with the output of a normal 4.0 unless its a monster with poor gearing

Yeah I agree, but others fit V8's, engine has done 128,000, which I know is nothing for these motors, but since I'm swapping the head, wouldn't hurt to replace the lifters and cam... will depend on time as need to get motor sorted then get 4.88:1 gears in and rear locker, next event is April 21...

I've got one of those Crane cams and matching lifters (new in box) you can have for a very reasonable price. Supposedly they need careful setup and break-in and stock and not performance valve springs. I'm going for a new cam that comes with matched valve springs and lifters.

Supposedly a bit of port matching and smoothing / polishing can help and it can't do any harm really if you've got facilities to do it.
