Started the lift because I couldn't wait. Came across a problem. Got the new springs and shocks I. But the axle won't turn back the right way. Seems like its twisting. Stuck in a bit of a rut here.
Anyone from South Wales able to shed some knowledge as this is my first and I'm a bit out of my depth!
Cheers
-
What size lift is it?
Did you get new lower control arms with it most kits over +2" come with longer lower arms, if not why have you undone the lowers from the axle?
You might find it easier if you take the springs and shocks back off, re connect the control arms and then re fit the springs and shocks.
-
First disconnect your sway bar links, that might help getting you lower control arms back on a bit easier
Do I spot coil spacers, what lift you putting on (height), do you need the coil spacers?.
-
5" lift. I've got adjustable lowers. I disconnected the lowers to drop the axle more because I clouldnt get the springs in. There 3" lift springs with a 2" spacer. . I will be running 33" when I sort this mess out. Plus I'm only using standard trolley jacks. Think I need bigger jacks.
To be honest thought I'd be able to do it, I've just rushed into it.

Thats a lot of lift for 33's, I would loose the spacers
What have you got sorted for the prop & transfer case drop / engine spacers ?
-
Nothing as yet. Didn't really think I would need the transfer drop. But it's not a problem il get them fitted as soon as the lift is on.
-
Good luck
Think you need to re-think this
:icon_jook:
-
I take that the lift you've got is a standard 3" lift, ie shocks and springs.. You might find with the additional 2" spacers that your shocks are to short.. Other things you might need to look at is extended brake and axle breather lines, as 5" will stretch them for sure, to mention just a few issues from this sort of lift...
As a wild idea - take out the 2" spacers as the 3" lift with 33" tires will work, and if you want a bit more lift, fit a 1.25" body a 1" motor lift.. This will also help with aligning the drive shaft angle, then you don't need the transfer-case drop.. So in total you'll end up with a 4.25" lift, and sure the Jeep will cope with it much better..
Well, just a thought...
-
Thanks for the info, the reason why I've gone with this setup, because I chap I spoke to had this setup in his.
I'm going to get the shocks and springs out tonight. Gonna buy a bigger jack aswell. See what I sort.

You can't actually do this with an XJ, as they use a uniframe as opposed to the separate chassis that a TJ uses! :003:
-
Fair enough, thought it was a TJ...
-
OK.
This is going to sound like I'm the harbinger of doom, but you need to know what's in your future. If you do this right, you'll end up with a well sorted and capable off road monster. do half a job and you're gonna want to torch it within weeks.
You will certainly need a big lift to get 33" tyres under an XJ the 3" lift on it's own isn't going to do it. To stand any chance of fitting the lift without hours of pain I'd suggest you get the springs and shocks back off and fit the control arms first. That will get the axle back under control and make it easier to line everything up. Then fit the springs and last of all the shocks. If it's a 5" lift, you're gonna need longer sway bar drop links at the very least so disconnect those while you're doing the work, otherwise they'll make life difficult for you; then consider fitting disconnects.
You will certainly need a TC drop kit and maybe a SYE and new prop. You can sometimes get away without them on smaller lifts but you're gonna get god awful vibration and eat UJs without something to get the driveline back in alignment.
Then you'll need to sort brake lines and all the other bits you forget need doing.
.
Oh and then to get some sensible gearing back you'll probably need to re gear your axles (or swap them out for the axles from a 2.5 petrol XJ).
-
I've got extended brake lines anyway, I'm going to remove all the stuff tonigh and do as you said Chris.
Just need to get the measurements for the adjustable control arms.
The SYE will be coming in a couple of weeks so that's sorted.
Got a mate coming round to lend a hand so should get it sorted.
-
I'll shut up then- sound's like you're sorted. :greggmo:
Do you have some sway bar disconnects planned? I know there are some folks out there who say they run without a front sway bar, but having driven a lifted XJ without one, I wouldn't want to do more than a few miles on the road.
You will need to consider a re-gear too with 33" tyres. The truck will be gutless without one on the road and have no engine braking off road. sorry if you've got all this in hand, I'm not trying to teach ya to suck eggs! Mine was JUST acceptable with 31s on standard ratios (but only just).
-
just read your other post. I really should pay more attention! :jpshakehead: :icon_biggrin:

Haha I'm waiting for the upper control arms to arrive, and yeah I have quick disconnects. Il be taking away the rear sway bar all together.
I got all the stuff just rush into it last night and ended up in right old pickle lol.
Really appreciate the advice thou, second jeep, first lift.
I was just really worried last night that I fucked something up because of the angle the axle is, but when I though about it when the weight of the jeep was in the springs is was pressing down and making the bend, when I get the wheels back on suppose it will straighten out.
Does anyone know how the get the correct length of adjust on the control arms?
-
You're suppliers of the control arms might have the details.......
Otherwise it's a case of measuring or knowing original wheelbase....... Cos when you lift with factory arms the wheelbase gets shorter as the arms angle become greater..... So you extend to
Get back original wheelbase.....or greater......
Getting info to start you off from the suppliers is the first step....unless some Birty here has done the same lift with same products.
If ya stuck..... I would extend new arms 3/4 inch longer than standard and see how ya go......you can always tweak either way from there.....

And this one has guns :jump_125:
That's the other reason.
-
Not to mention a hatred for rank :070:
-
That's awesome thanks Donk.
Did I see a mention of guns?
I shoot myself.
-
There's no rank here.
Every Birty is equal. It's just that some are more equal than others.
Now I'm off to sleep on that bed. :king:
-
I shoot myself.
ok so the lift did go as you wanted, but shooting yourself is a bit drastic
not allowed guns anymore so I run myself over now :hysterical:
-
When I installed my lift I found a pair of HEAVY DUTY spring compressors came in very handy, not the pussy ones from the local auto store. I borrowed some from my local garage. As said earlier, think you will find it all goes back together easier with the lower control arms on first, then the spacers and coil springs. I feel for ya, been there, much swearing and cursing at the bastard. Was under my Jeep yesterday and it was being a bastard, and the cold..............
-

Thanks a fecking lot, just spilt my coffee reading that :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:

When the lower control arms are on, remove the shock bottom mounts each side, put a trolley jack under one side of the axle on the knuckle and raise it up, this will lower the opposite side, hopefully with the spring under compression and your mate pushing down the spring will pop right in onto the spacer, same the other side and job done.

Right finally it's done!!!!!
BUT lol
This adjustable track bar won't fit!
It's hit the rock crusher diff guard and the drop bracket it comes with drops its massively.
Anyone fitted a RHD iron rock adjustable track bar kit to a XJ.

Here's some pictures showing the track bar hitting the diff guard.
Just seen a right hand one on another truck over this side of the pond and its different to the bar I have been sent. Fuming!!!
-
Rob can you stop making multiple topics about your lift :011:
-
It's making the topics when I post the pictures. Tapatalk is saying upload fail when I upload the pics.
-
I've been told that your using an outdated version of TT. Any chance of upgrading? :icon_biggrin:
-
I think you might be tapping your Tapatalk with too many Taps!!!
-
That looks like a lhd trackbar.
-
:iagree:
need to mod your old one
-
Just spoke to Iron rock and they have sent me a right hand track bar bracket but a LHD track bar..... Idiots!
There sending me a Right hand track bar now. Express so should be with me Saturday.
Lets hope I don't have to pay duty on this.
So looks like I have a adjustable track bar LHD for sale soon then because they don't want the left one back.

You will have to pay import duty and all that goes with it :( but they should credit it you as a matter of compo
-
Wow, u made good progress, even in this cold ...
-
Well I was lucky enough not to pay anything when this one turned up Saturday. Got my fingers crossed!
-
don't count your eggs just yet m8, some couriers require duty paid up front and some invoice after delivery
-
Yup.
I've had bills weeks after the stuff arrived in the past. :banghead:
-
Me to its not the tax that really gets me it's the £10+ they change for paying it for you on top of the £50+ they charge for shipping in the first place :headhack:

Right then folks finished the rear end today. After battling through the snow and the arctic weather.
Just waiting for Dave at Llama to get my transfer drop kit and 6 degree axle shims. And my track bar lol.
Time to get the arches on next I think.

Right after installing my correct track bar I thought I take the Cherokee out for a trail run.
Wheels haven't been aligned yet, went over a speed bump and bang!
The rough country quick discos smacked the under side on the wheel arch. There screwed as far done as they will go.
Think my U joints on my front axles have gone as well. Jacked it up and moved the wheel back and forth and there's slight play in the joint, and the front drive shaft u joint there is grease coming out.
Think I'm going to get it to the garage tomorrow to have it all checked over.
-
The winch is in!
Looks great but where do I put the number plate?
After some figuring out I've got a lot of at ony front axle U joints! So these will need to replaced ASAP.
-
magnetic No plate on the bonnet
-
Good idea!
Are U Joints easy to replace on the front axle
