So I picked up this little chestnut:
to try and morph into this slot, plus winch
-
and since my steering box managed to pull through the chassis box, we have been trying to beef it up somewhat:
-
I've just been measuring up around my steering box for the same thing. What size bolts did you drill the box out for?
-
same as standard, but I got some longer ones locally and die'd the threads longer as the new ones had shanks, the tube inserts are absolutly the same id size as the shank od so there should be no slop
-
Thanks Will, I thought maybe you'd drilled the box out and planned to put nuts on the end. I like the idea of having more thread on there.
-
Willo, pulling box through chasis is impressive! From the pictures looks to be well beefed up. One thought after twice mounting a steering box in the last month, did you use 3 or 4 mounting bolts?
-
Its still in the mock up stages using the existing as pulled through holes, so box us in same place. At the miment it is located with 3 bolts but to add the fourth is a piece of cake
-
sweet grill :greggmo:
-
Any rate, its good to see you getting your Jeeping Mojo back... And if its of any help, I picked up 7.5m of TJ chassis sized box section few weeks, sure I can spare a bit...
-
Willo it would be best to get some stronger bolts. The markings on the heads indicate those are only grade 5 or standard bolts. For holding your steering on I would trust grade 8 high tensile bolts much better.
-
Ok. So back to the drawing board :-/

:iagree:
-
I've seen it recommended to drill through and put nuts on the bolts. I was thinking of doing this with 12mm bolts (10.9 or 12.9) but it would mean also grinding a flat surface on the box which would cut into the strengthening 'ribs' on the box so was uncertain about it at first thought. Only going metric because of ease of sourcing replacements for me.
-
Willo get some cap heads from your local hydraulic people, grade 12 so stronger than the box and freely available in UNC sizes due to there prevalence in the hydraulic world.
If you struggle let me know what size you need :icon_winkle:
Note:If they are UNF then ignore my last comment :003:
-
there's a place near me that sells unf and metric grade 8 bolts lose by the bolt
can post some if needed
-
Last night a personal Jeeping milestone was reached, I managed to half set up and install my front ring and pinion. Man Alive you need some patience. :003:
I was struggling a bit with good gear pattern or correct backlash, and am now fairly certain all i need to do is move one waffer thin shim from the right to the left to end up with an ok gear pattern and correct backlash.
I also found that a big Geeee clamp will suffice as an axle spreader :icon_super:
Here is a pic of the gear mesh on the drive side with backlash a bit too big
-
the studs for my jana diff covers are also super helpful for resting the carrier on just before you try to wrangle the bugger into the case :greggmo:
-
Good man patients is key
-
:imwitstupid:
Well done, I've used a g clamp too.
The bloody shims are a pain, my Chrysler rear axle has spin adjusters and it saves so much messing around.
-
fortunatly the pinion depth was already set correctly so I only had to do the carrier bearings shimming in order to set the backlash and gear meshing.
Its not a half day job though is it...what a pita, That being aid I am stoked that I a) understand it (kinda) Thanks to Billavista, and b) had a good go at it
-
I allowed a weekend per axle because rushing just doesn't help with this kind of job. For me anyway :umn:
-
no, many cups of tea maketh the job :greggmo:
-
:imwitstupid: I went through about 5 just trying to change my spark plugs!
-
When I do axles I just say I will ring when its ready that way when it just does not want to rightyou can shutthe worksop door on it for a few hours to get ya head back in to it
-
some progress today
-
Have been getting out doing some shock testing recently, and have been adjusting the shim stacks according to my USA forum research, here are the results, at 4.24 I hit a 2' lump at about 40mph....

-
You said you were going to lower the driver seat but isn't that a bit extreme?
Looks good but how does the body roll feel?
-
body roll is still an issue at speed...but I have an antirock to go on the back to help cure this
-
Camera makes it look like a smooooth ride :icon_twisted:
Noŵ if that was my leaves.......... :jpshakehead: Loose fillings....... :icon_twisted:
-
I think we are seeing the birth of one of UK leading experts on Fox Air Shocks....
-
sweet as matey, that vid was great, THE THING (jeep rover named :icon_winkle:) aint gonna keep up :003: but i will have a blast trying :icon_super:
-
Hmmmmm
-
That's going to really bugger your winch rope. Maybe you should also think about putting it behind the headlights.
-
You think? :003:

:hysterical:
-
Finally got the rear shocks mounted a bit higher tonight :greggmo: and thus the cog has come down a bit, just got some weird fuelling issue now :017:
We will be at the Welsh Xtrem in a couple of weeks if anyone fancies a giggle?
-
So the cj grill is about 2" wider than the tj grill, slats are gonna have to go :-/
-
MB grill would fit right in :icon_twisted:
-
You got one lying about?
-
If,only........
£200 to get one then the lights and stuff.......Tis what put me on hold for a while...... Reckon I could see £4-500 by the time job was done :jpshakehead:
-
So I found the relay for the horn, does anyone know where the fuse is?
-
According to my 97 TJ owners manual its fuse 20 in the PDC, 20amp mini yellow. Is there a picture in the lid of your PDC?
Mike C
-
Yeah, I found it in the pdc...not that I have the jeep anymore..
-
Had a fantastic time at the Welsh Xtrem, suspension was smooth, axles worked a treat, so what left to break.......oh yeah the spinny thing under the bonnet:
We even managed to win the night stage which bagged me an Ashcroft locker:-)
-
Oppps. Time for a sbc swop then :icon_super:
-
holy shit, what happened, smashed block??
-
holy shit, what happened, smashed block??
Yeah Will, saw same on FB, bugger that, what happened ?
-
Con rods and cam shaft came out both side of the block.
-
not good,
so whats your plan??
-
got some pics that I will post up Will, great event but so tired today. Must have walked miles :icon_winkle:
I must apologise for your breakages, it must be me :icon_redface:
You came into my special stage 7 and bust your front winch then we found you on sunday and your truck made a nasty noise leading to retirement.
Well done for the night stage result tho :greggmo:
-
Well Clubberxx has got a 4.0 engine going.
Maf just dropped the same one in his TJ didn't he ?
4 weeks to go till IOW Bonanza ...... No pressure :icon_winkle:

There is more than enough power for my drive train in the 4.0 I6, so I will replace like for like, plus there are a few cherks about I can raid for parts. I also have an Aw4 to go in at the same time. I would quite like to stroke a 4.0 but am not sure now is the time to do it, my main concern is building a system or baffling the sump so that oil starvation is not an issue when operating at extreme angles for any length of time, like we do.
As steve will confirm, the axles and suspension were working a treat! :greggmo:
More late nights on pirate then...
-
Can you dry sump a 4l ? and would it help
-

:imwitstupid:
-
Dry sumping looks an expensive and complicated route. Did they ever do a deep sump :017:
-
Accusump is a good halfway house for short duration starvation. Can also be used for pre and post shut down oiling.
-
Can you dry sump a 4l ? and would it help
You can indeed :)
-
Well, we've had a few late nights apres work, last thursday the engine came out, followed quickly by the box and tc, and after a few hours at the weekend and tonight, trying to fathom out which orientation to have the clocking ring( i was trying to do away with it as the aw4 is a gnats longer than the ax15) we are all bolted back together and ready to go back in,
Oil cooler is coming, and i need to sort the loom mod and we are away, i may have to adjust where the axles sit to take into account the extra length of the aw4
-
Your getting there, would so love an auto box in mine,
Is yours the later box that a rubicrawler will fit??
-
God knows, its a 4 speed out of an xj
-
Probably not then, will hold in 1st gear for megga engine braking??
-
It will do as i have a widget to tell it to stay in first or second
-
You'll love it...
Tell me more about this widget
-
Its not the rad designs one, its the other one, whose name escapes me currently :greggmo:
-
WIDGET....
although it is the Rad one......lots to read on this site...... :icon_twisted:
http://radesignsproducts.com/Baja.html
-
I've read most of it forwards backwards upside down blah de blah, i may go for the baja at some point, but will see how my current one goes first, if it aint broke dont fix it ...
