ZJ gearbox.....
harptree Birtys will already know that I had a bit of a fry up on the way down...... :hysterical:
Seems OK now ..... Fluid topped up ...needed half a litre and all red and clean looking still.....
however......after 7 trips of 150 miles per journey......I reckon to have reached its dummy spitting time.......
looks like although they are rated to tow 3500 they don't like it.......added to which although I have had the trailer serviced and new brake cables two weeks ago I was still smoking the brakes on the last few miles to Harptree down the steep hills through those villages with width restrictions :jpshakehead:
brakes are new on the GC too.....
Just a heads up to any that may do as I have done.......and go large :icon_super:
-
So are plans afoot to upgrade to a bigger towing truck?
-
Oh yes......
dodge Cummins 5.9 400+ ft lbs of torque thingies and rated to tow 7 tons......should do the trick....
some swift horse trading needed to get things together for CF and beyond......... Sadly grounded and immobile till then......... :010:
-
F450, Sir?

F450, Sir?
Now ya talking serious.

These dont do narrow lanes
-
These dont do narrow lanes
What they do is crush them into wide lanes and take a few cyclists with them.....Dont forget to tweet after tho WW :lol_hitting:
-
You related to the blonde by any chance?
-
These dont do narrow lanes
Can't be any wider than the 1 Ton and that managed some narrow lanes all on its own on the weekend.

rangrer 3.2

Just had an economy thought...... :jpshakehead:
warthog gave me a heads up on a Nissan 4.2 as a tug........
Got my eyes on a last of issue 98/99 LWB non turbo version....... Would this do the trick or be crawling up hills at 40...... ?
I know at least a couple of you Birtys are Nissan fans
I am towing at least up to the 3.5 ton limit........I am told :icon_twisted:
-
Can't comment on the towing limit Jez, but the 4.2 should crawl rather quickly up all but the steepest hills.
-
Nissan tows well, not the most powerfull of engines (think they are about 160hp without turbo) but the drivetrain is strong. Also rot like only a datsun can. Not the most frugal motor either, early 20s at best so ive heared. Friend of mine loves his, but has spent alot of time welding on it.
-
Oh and cummins engines have a habit of eating dodge autos so find a manual transmission one if you go that route.
A cummins ram will laugh at 3.5 ton.
-
diesel Dan's is non turbo then?.....
And I thought you had a Cummins now? Has box gone bang on yours......?
hear that the 24 valve ones have fuel pressure issues that can take out the lift pump and fuel pump......... Am tempted to be sure........ Oh yes.......
oh yes.......congrats on getting married.......... Hope to see you sometime this off roading season
:icon_super:
-
Thanks, yup dans is non turbo at the moment but is going to turbo it. My ram is manual(nv4500) and with it being a 24valve first thing i did was get a high output aftermarket lift pump (airdog) and a fuel pressure gauge. 24 valve injection pumps get a bad rep but its the craptastic lift pumps that stop working causing the injection pump to fail, keep them fed with fuel under pressure and they are fine. Mine also has a quadzilla adrenaline :icon_twisted: which adds 180hp and 400lbs of torque on max setting which is nice, then you can press a dash mounted button to go to economy mode when you have finished embarrassing the boy racer
-
thanks........ :icon_twisted: that's got me addicted to a Cummins then..... Gonna be researching all that now.......... Sounds like fun with all that torque....... :hysterical: oh yes :icon_twisted:
-
If your up this way call in and have a go, see if you like it or not

The ZJ is rated at 2300 kgs towing not 3500 kgs :icon_winkle:
that's a worry :hysterical:......but in all seriousness there is a sticker on the drivers side cill that says 3500 kg?????
all I can say is that whatever it says the ZJ ain't up to it......... As you all know......I have tested so you my Birty mates don't have to :icon_super:

spotted ........ :hysterical:
First manual I've seen.... But earlier pics showed a 5th wheel set up so maybe its been ragged and with no history........whô knows???
But if it goes cheap enough for my wallet........maybe........Tis in Edinburgh.......but cheap rail ticket from here for £40 odd squid :icon_biggrin:
-
:017: It's 2WD.
-
very few 4x4s around....... ( unmolested and not lifted with 35s)
Ideal is an extra cab 4x4 cummins with 5 speed.......none around :jpshakehead:
Second best is anything with a cummins :icon_twisted:
Tis only KORC that will cause a prob...... So far I think.
-
bum was in Edinburgh last week i could have gone and had a look for you :banghead: :banghead:
-
I think you'll be fine at KORC, my mate tows his up to the camp site with a motorhome no probs..
