Title: 5.9 v8 and 4 speed '81 gearbox
Post by: djrr6 on March 27, 2006, 08:55:18 PM
I am currently buying a 5.9 and am told a 4.2 bellhousing will mate to the 5.9 however i aren't sur whether it will mate to the 4 speed i already have in as currently running the GM 151 engine in mine.

CJ King beleives he has a 4.2 bellhousing he can sort me which will be great if works but knowing jeeps I can't beleive its that easy!

Any ideas or anyone who's already tried it?

Will the 'box from a 151 be strong enough?

i think the box will hold up to road use but would probably spit its dummey out at being beasted off road

the amount its cost me to date dont know if i dare take it off road ever again!!

gonna try mate it to the 3 speed i think as advised by few people the 5.9 will turn my 4 speed into a pile of broken cogs!

nope it wont fit gm bolt patern wont fit the 360 plus  it will be the sr4 trany and just wont take the power dont know if the 4.2 bellhousing will fit the tranny i somhow rekon not the bolt patern is the same as chevy v8 and v6 the v6 might be worth a shot and there is plenty about if you look

so will the 3 speed mate directly to the v8 or will i need to modify? also i've been advised to upgrade the rad (obviously) but also told i'll need upgraded springs cos of the weight?

I dont wanna sound 'green' but i would have thought the leaf springs were the same regardless of it bein a 2.5 or 5 v8?

gonna get new hedman headers, engine, new 3 speed box and whatever else in the garage along side each other i think and try work out what else i need from there.

a shed load of replacement bolts springs to mind

springs should be fine the three speed will bolt to the v8 without any drama using a v8 or straight 6 bellhousing

If your doing that much work why not do the chevy NV4500 5 speed upgrade?

true king cj i was only yaking bout the gm set up the nv box aint that easy to find good box but the 3speed is plenty strong and cheap in comparison
Title: upgrade

I am getting that familiar jeep feeling of long nights in the garage and calls to bank manager coming on again.

Reckon best thing to do is drop the engine, box transfer case and bellhousing out of mine and do direct swop from crank to prop shaft with upgraded gear.
only other issue then is the hydraulic clutch on mine and presumably a cable clutch on the big V.
which way do you advise I convert cable or hydraulic?

Once again thanks for the help guys as know i wouldnt have even attempted this if wasnt for all advice i'm getting.
