Title: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: tris on June 18, 2013, 08:53:01 PM
Had a couple of hours on the 8 today, main aim is to chase & cut out the dreaded rust before it spreads even more & then I can see what fab work is required.
Started the cutting out & front end has started to come off. Surprisingly easy! Bulkhead is in good nick luckily.
Plan is going to be remove the tub! Taking off what I can at the moment as a new shed is being built this summer for it so cab etc staying on for now until its inside.

Do you want to buy some press braked sides to go with those floors? (https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.desismileys.com%2Fsmileys%2Fdesismileys_0001.gif&hash=ea933015d6026327d959bf0abfa5ee9748366072) (http://www.desismileys.com/)

Looks like you need them! they are just some mild steel i had bent up to copy the old ones, but be warned there will be a lot of welding and sanding involved. :jpshakehead:
Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: tris on June 18, 2013, 10:38:10 PM
There's gonna be alot of welding whichever route I take!! Send me a pic so I know what I'm looking at?

Those pics bring back memories :jpshakehead: if you get some new sill panels made(folded) see if you can find a local fabrication company that have a joggle wheel, itll keep the repair from distorting too much when you weld it.

There's gonna be some strengthening braces in there too. There's already 5mm gap of daylight between sides & floor in places.

My chassis had rotted on most of the body mounts under the pucks and a little bit in the chassis where the cj7 rear cross member would be. there is a photo somewhere ill see if i can find it as it may be worth a tap with the hammer.

And no i don't have any replacement chassis parts :003:
Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: Dave The Sparky on June 19, 2013, 09:57:39 PM
Here ya go, it was just in front of the cross member where the chassis returns back down and must be a kind of water trap.

Yeah i know where your coming from, the only good bits on mine were the bulkhead, the front cowl and the rear passenger floor section, everything else was a complete clusterf@ck.
I had to replace,
rear wing quarters, a large section of both rear wings, rear wheel tubs, front and rear floors (both sides), all 4 chassis riggers, the step section that goes across the chassis behind the seats, both front boxes (body mounts), 2 new front wings, windscreen surround, and loads of other bits i cant remember :jpshakehead: a few pics :003:

Cheers Jedi, can only do a few hours here & there at the moment as its outside under tarp so can't really take cab etc off yet with this crap weather, but when my new shed will be built in a few months, that's when the tub can come off & go on a spit frame for the fab work to start. I'm really looking forward to it, it's been a childhood dream owning an 8 so I'm happy as a pig in shit!!  :jump_125:

Do these run the full length arch to arch? How wide are they?
Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: Dave The Sparky on June 22, 2013, 05:34:12 PM
They are 5ft long and approx 5.5 inches tall in total with a 5 inch return from the start of the first bend if that makes sense.
I think they are 1.2mm steel as is the original tub, but they could be 1.5mm and i would need to double check that figure another time.

Managed to get a couple of hours in this eve, in between showers, fuel tank now off, little bit of pinhole central on the bottom side  :icon_eek:

Hedman headers are off also, some repair needed on the joints  :icon_eek:

Any recommendations on a good (cheap) exhaust fab shop? Mid wales, Shropshire, midlands (ish)

Nice little pressie from the states waiting for me today. No metal work is going to start until the shed is built so I'll keep looking for parts for now.Picked up the side pipes & a nice new HEI distributor & a few bits from 5536paulj today. Just want to crack on with it now  :015:

Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: tris on July 29, 2013, 08:05:41 PM
& so the jigsaw puzzle starts. All the bad steel in the front section has now been cut out.
Side panels arrived today from Mr Sparky (cheers Dave)

Bit of advice needed? Would it better to tack weld the new sides & floor before taking the tub off to save any possible twisting or would it be best to take tub off & square it up when it's off incase the tub has twisted already :017:

I'm also thinking of cutting the whole of the rear floor & inner arches out & starting again. I'm thinking that a sheet metal fabricator would make these up quite easily by using the old floor as a template.

Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: tris on June 29, 2014, 10:31:01 PM
Well, it's been year & since last update its gone downhill from there really. Top floor in the shed is done now so while I had the fork lift here this weekend moving the jeep parts, I decided to take the tub off the 8. If I wasn't depressed looking at it under tarp for 12 months, I am now!!! So tub is pretty shagged to say the least. I'm seriously considering chopping the tub at the mid scuttle panel & replacing the whole front end from my other 7. There will still be enough work on the rear tub after that.
On a positive note, the chassis is still in one piece after a steam clean!  :jpshakehead:

Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......
Post by: xr6jeeper on June 30, 2014, 09:38:58 AM
Stick with it tris, ill admitt that its a bit daunting to start with mine was the same :jpshakehead: dont chop it all out at once just start on one side at a time, weld some cross braces in to stop it collapsing.
Its a shame you cant get the underneath sand blasted at least then youll be able to get a clearer picture and maybe get some oxide and flat black hammerite on the good bits this will lessen the blow of the bad bits :hysterical: trust me it worked for me, good luck mate :icon_winkle:

I'll stick with it! I'm in too deep now & it ain't worth nothing as it is! I've got all the parts required its just what to attack first is the dilemma  :017:
Title: Re: Project scrambler begins.......UPDATE
Post by: tris on February 20, 2015, 09:12:32 PM
So it's been a while since I updated you the 8 rebuild (7 months ish)
Original plan was to repair but it has ended up as a full rebuild. chassis has been taken back to bare metal & re painted, new steering bits, tank, brake lines, fuel lines. Tub went off to the surgery. Rear end has been rebuilt with new steel, front end is now from a clean YJ. Some piccy's so far. Still a way to go yet. Not a sight of rust now so next step is  full re-wire & respray.

Definitely slowly drained the finances. Basically saved £50 a week, then bought what I needed every couple of months hence why it's taken so long!! Worth it in the end though, nice to revive a what was rotten CJ8 back to its former glory. Save up again now for the fekin paint job  :icon_eek:
