Title: New to the forum ,jeep cherokee 2.8 crd offroading advice
Post by: kdev on June 20, 2013, 10:13:35 AM
Hi all,
Im new to offroading/ greenlaning and would appreciate any advice to the modifications reqd for the cherokee03 crd to enable some mild offroading eg drive around days and greenlaning.
Ive got bf goodridge all terrains but other than that the car is standard. Do i need extra underbody protection for instance?
I cant seem to find any uk suppliers of recovery points, skid plates etc, any suggestions?
Many thanks for your time in answering

Hi Mate,

Only heard that the oil filter might be a bit low on the engine and prone to catching on things so a skid plate in that area is adviseable Other that than dunno what else is required.

For everything KJ (Liberty in the USofA) look at : http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=5

Sure others will chime in later.

I had an 05 plate 2.8crd auto, and the oil filter was very vulnerable.  I fitted an ASFIR aluminium skid plate, which also protected the auto box and transfer case.  I didn't lift mine since it was my daily driver, but it was too low for serious offroading (but great on road).  I know when I sold the skid plate, and had a few battle scars (so it did it's job).  I took mine laning to Spain a few times.

I seem to recall that 2" suspension lift is the way to go, either cheap spacers or better replacement shocks/springs.  Heavy duty springs are required due to the extra weight of the diesel engine.

As mentioned, LOST is a good place for help, and I seem to remember a Dutch guy called Tony, living in Spain, would give some good advice for modding the diesel models, since most kits available in the USA were for the petrol versions (but it's been a few years since I checked).

I have an '03 Crd and what the guys are saying is correct..that filter is in the danger zone. You can go for a full underbody plate, or a partial one..in any case, motor cooling will be affected to a degree because of airflow restriction. In the end, it is your choice as to what you choose. As far as the lift goes,  2" would make a comfortable difference..but in the hands of an experienced KJ driver, a stock standard version will surprise a lot of the 'old school' drivers who adhere to the 'height is might' rule.

Go forth and have fun.
