I have a 2000 4.7 WJ and now and again I get a clunk noise from the front end. I thought it could of been on of the link ends but they are not that old. There is some play where the Pittman arm connects to the box and I have checked the nut that fastens the arm to the bottom of the box and it is torqued correctly. Is it normal to have a bit of play in the bottom of the box where the Pittman arm attaches and if not is there a fix? Rather than a new box
Cheers,
Daz

Hi, it is very unlikely the play you feel is the pitman arm moving on the pitman shaft as this is on a taper spline and need a puller to remove them , what you are proboably feling is movement within the steering box you could try adjusting it with the allen bolt on the top of the shaft. it is worth noting that this is a left hand thread so loosen the 16mm locknut clockwise and turn the allen key anticlockwise.I had a similiar clunk on mine which turned out to be the anti roll bar D bushes.

Hi mate,
Thanks for the reply. I've replace all the "D" bushes and stab links so they're ok. It's definitely in the box as the Pittman arm is nice and tight on the shaft. I've seen some threads of people adjusting the steering box for a bit of play in the steering wheel but I wasn't sure that it would cure the play at the bottom of the box too but thanks for that. Is it quite easy to do?

Have you checked the steering wheel shaft for play into the box, the splines can sometimes strip (that was certainly the case on my one)

It may be that your box is going the same wat as my old one. i sometimes got a clunk on near full lock left and a loss of lock right.it turned out that a large clip in the box had broken and was slowly being devoured by the box.

looks like wj's have a problem exactly same symptoms as mine got told it was the recirculating balls collapsing. looks like recon time.
