On my 1998 ZJ GC I have what I can only describe as a very load creaking & groaning noise coming from the steering every time I move the wheel. The steering is actually OK and does not seem to be suffering because of this noise which seems to be coming from the steering box.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be the cause and how it may be rectified.

Check for cracks in the chassis where the steering box bolts on.

Went to check for cracks as Mike suggested and as the wife was in, I got her to turn the steering wheel a few times. I might have been mistaken about the noise coming from the steering box as it actually seems to originate from the linkage at the wheels.
Is that a case of a squirt of WD40?

Grease her nipples, the Jeep not the wife!

Might be time for some new joints and some TLC if that's the case but I've never heard of a ball joint creak before.
-
grease everything that has a nipple, that's all track rod ends and upper balljoints before you do anything
drive it for a bit and if it still creaks get your better half to move the steering wheel side to side but this time put your hand on each joint, you should feel where the problem is and/or see movement

I greased every nipple in sight on Saturday and the creaking and groaning has reduced greatly all though still does it a wee bit. I will see how it goes for rest of this week and if necessary re-grease again at the weekend.
