Title: ABS Light
Post by: rosie5golf on September 21, 2013, 04:04:52 PM
 :jpshakehead:
Hi, I am back on this site after selling my beloved Jeep and about to buy a 1996 4ltr as an alternative to using my X type Jaguar estate which is a bit under powered for towing our caravan.
The problem is that the guy had a new caliper fitted and now the ABS light will not go out. He has taken it to a brake specialist who has bled the system, checked the sensors etc but, it still won't go off !
Before I hand over the readies, can anyone advise what else it might be ? I don't want this to get expensive.
Someone suggested that I disconnect the battery for a few hours, leave the ignition and lights on whilst it is disconnected so that the whole system resets itself when the battery is reconnected. Does this sound like a good idea ??

Stating the obvious here - you need a friend with a scanner, who is close enough to help.....

Or buy a scanner there cheap on ebay
If you got an android phone and http://torque-bhp.com/ and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBD-OBD2-Diagnostic-Code-Reader-Scanner-Bluetooth-for-Android-Torque-UPGRADED-/380648564775?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item58a06c2827

it could be duff Sensor or sensor wiring
bleeding the brake dose not normally causer a problem

First thing I'd do is check the wires in case a one was damaged during the caliper swap. If it's a bad sensor they tend to go open circuit when they fail. In that case you can disconnect the sensors and measure their resistances with a multimeter to find the bad one. OBDII scanners don't usually read ABS faults as far as I know.

Thanks all you guys. Anyone near Camborne or Redruth with a scanner or, can you recommend a mobile guy who could come and check it on the drive. I am worried about driving it without an m.o.t.

Amazon or ebay is your friend

Alternative scanner:  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/D900-Lastest-2013-Version-Universal-OBD2-Scanner-16-Pin-OBD-Port-OBD2-Scanner-01-/251344206638?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3a85483b2e

It works with Chrysler vehicles (Jeep) as I have one, the useful thing with this one is it has live data feed, tells you the voltage of the various sensors etc.

DO you know if this is compatible with 2001 XJ?

Pretty sure 01's are OBDIII and if they are no it wont work.

Since my last post in September, I decided not to buy the jeep as it did not seem sensible to have it sitting outside for 6 months of the year not being used. So, if anyone is interested, it is still sitting on my neighbours drive. It is a 1996 4 ltr, blue in colour and in very good nick. Obviously, no tax or m.o.t. due to the brake sensor.
The guy is making no effort to sell it but would take £350 for it as that it what it cost him for the last service. It is in Illogan Downs Cornwall, so if you want any further info just message me.

To be perfectly honest, I'd buy that right now if I could get it here at  a reasonable price, but I can't, so I'm stuffed!!

Ahh this is distressing me now - I really want it, but already have a few things to pay off, and my parents are of the attitude that "you already have a Jeep, why do you need another?"  :banghead:

If it's still about in a few weeks I may be in a better position!
