OK I fitted the spare alty to the XJ this evening after the old one finally popped its clogs.
All bolted on, belt routed etc and fired the motor up ..... no charge at all :banghead:
Rechecked all the connections and all are good, no out put from the alty :banghead:
Any ideas to try before I melt the plastic buying a new one tomorrow.
Need the car to get me to manchester Sat morning to go on holiday :011:

check you got a voltage to the armature connection. to check that the ECU is ok and controlling the alternator
-
Make sure your battery is fine, also positive lead is properly connected etc... If not charge, alternator is a no go, but to confirm that, and autolec will be able to test it for you..

OK, todays lesson is as follows :icon_redface:
If a wire has shorted and the connector is FUBAR, replacing the connector is not the only thing you should be looking at.
There are TWO ends of any wire and a shorted one may have damage elsewhere other than the obvious melted end ...... the other end may have got hot and melted too :banghead:
Reconnecting the other end will then produce a good connection and result in the alternator actually getting its charge to the battery :hysterical:
DOH! :003:
and
PHEW :icon_super:
Thanks for the advice chaps :icon_winkle:
