Title: TJ ABS .... Bit strange
Post by: Arno on October 13, 2013, 07:44:40 AM
This can't be normal... start to notice that my ABS is acting a bit weird

Under normal braking conditions, all is working as it should... But when I have to slam on the brakes, I can feel the brake paddle vibrates, indicating that the ABS kicked it..  But this does not always means I'm slowing down

Yesterday, same thing happening, brake hard, paddle vibrates,  but not slowing down, pump the brakes, then they rock hard, still not slowing down... Eventually after a few pumps I manage to brake..

No ABS light on the dash that I could recall, and no, not gonna try it again

Any ideas??

You can try and replicate it at low speeds on any slippery surface, eg wet car park (empty) or gravel lane / farm track.

No leaks, brake fluid not dropping, noting

It only seems to happen when I have to slam on the brakes and the ABS kicks in, if I then pump the brakes, it goes rock hard, but works fine aftr a few pumps..

Normal braking, I got no problem..

Something breaking down in the pipes, the rubber brake pipes I mean causing dodgy pressure hence ABS kicking in  :017:

I've read about the brake hoses disintegrating when they getting old, so think I'll replace them, and rebuild the callipers whilst at this, might even replace the brake fluid as well.. Then surely it should sort it then ..

I suspect there's nothing wrong with it. If the base braking system is working fine (which you say it is) and the ABS light is out, it's pretty unlikely. Doing an ABS stop is a weird sensation, The system takes over if the wheels start to lock up, the pedal will vibrate and feel weird, and the car will feel as if it isn't going to stop. What you don't want to do is lift off the brake. Take it somewhere safe with a slippery surface, blatt it down the road, slam the brakes on and hold the pedal down till it comes to a stop. If you're not killed to death leave it alone.
