After trying out the TJ yesterday, I started on maintenance work today. There were a few surprises ( maybe not so surprising)
Gearbox oil looked like dirty milk , transfer case oil I swear was normal gearbox oil and not atf or it had been in that long that it had changed completely  :010:.
The diff oils were all a water oil mix. :jpshakehead: The coolant was just rusty water , all anti freeze had long since been diluted.

All fluids now changed just the diffs to finish off.When the rear diff is open can I see if the rear axle has the Detroit Truetrac Limited Slip Differential fitted?
The front diff has a breather fitted that stretches above the radiator but there is no breather on the rear diff- should it have one?

Just a few questions,
Should the rear diff and gearbox have breathers?
There is a lot of play in the bottom bushes of the rear shocks,can I replace just the bushes or do I have to replace the shocks?
There is no rear anti roll bar, does it need one for the MOT next year?

Gearbox, transfer and diffs shoud all have breathers. You can change the shock bushes if you can get them, may have to order stateside. The lack of anti-roll bar should not be an issue for mot as long as it has all gone.

First of all, I'd change the diff, Gb and TC oils again in about 300 miles, just to make sure there's no more crap in there. It will save them for only a few quid spent.

Your Diffs will have breather pipes on them and should be extended above the bonnet area if you intend to go through shit.

The rear diff breather is at the 't' piece for the brakes on the rear axle half way out on the passenger (left) side. The (manual) gearbox breather on mine doesn't have a pipe but is located just behind the shift lever. Doesn't seem to let water in though. Transfer box breather is on top of the box in the middle somewhere ( easier to see from the passenger side).  Check pipes aren't kinked or trapped (like mine was!).
