Title: CJ7 - Could be that battery was not the culprit - Leccy's ?
Post by: Dutch on December 03, 2013, 08:59:35 PM
Sourced a 680A battery from work to fault find.

Still no go - only the sharp 'click' from the solenoid.

So, went down the earthing route - found that starter motor was hanging off, only loosely held on by one bolt , refastened this and then disconnected (-) from battery to engine mount - earth strap from engine mount to chassis - cleaned them all up and a bit of sandpaper to get rid of corrosion - refastened all.

Still only sharp click from solenoid and no movement from starter motor.

I then put 2 jump leads direct on the starter motor - plenty of sparks from the battery terminals but not a squeak from the motor.

Fuck - I had the bloody thing off yesterday to clean before refastening.

When jump starting from the WK the other day it did sound a bit lumbered but put that down to dead battery.

Am I looking at brushes in the starter motor? - all summer it started by even looking at the key - did this month sitting outside
bugger up the starter motor? - can hardly believe it  :icon_sad:

Done that - that is gentle taps wit a hammer all round.  Reminds me of my dad when I was small.  The Volvo Penta in the sailing boat had a poorly starter.  Prior to every trip he would knock the sh*t out of it with a hammer. After a bit that housing  looked pretty bad  :003:
