i have a problem or 2 with the xj......

when i pull off from standing i get a wobble in the drivetrain that feels like wheel wobble coming thro the seat, once you get moving (above 10mph) its gone.....

also, when you select drive there is a very savage clunk like its taking up the slack in something.......& its twice as bad if you go from drive to reverse or vice versa........

& for some reason, the transfer case now knocks on the skid, esp when reversing..........the skid aint bent & i have shimmed it away from the chassis rail to reduce the knocking......

Have you got a shot motor / trans mount somewhere?

It would seem to be the only explanation for the transfer case hitting the skid when you pull away.

If you get this especially after stopping, for example at a roundabout and then pulling away and you've got a TracLoc in the rear, change the oil and additive in it.

The transmission mounts sag on early XJs, if you fit a new one, you shoud get your clearence back.

Check all the UJs and diffs for excessive backlash.

If you have got a worn transmission mount (and it's known on early XJ's (didn't know that bit))it could be causing all the clunks and bangs.  As the drive engages the props it could snatch the gearbox in it's mounts, so i'd look there first.

thank guys!

i did suspect the gearbox mounting to be worn.........tis not split but does seem a bit soft!

Mike, how much of the above is possibly caused from the rear diff?? I did consider whether the transfer box drive chain is slack??

how many little bottles of additive are ya supposed to chuck in the diff?? one??

You use one bottle of friction modifier in the rear diff.
Make sure one of the engine mounts hasn't broken (try lifting the engine and see if one seperates)
The chain drives the front axle so if it's no better in 2WD, it's probably not the main problem. Remember, though that a little slack in all the different bits between engine and wheels will add up, and on an XJ you have a gearbox, transfer case, 2 UJs, a diff and driveshaft splines and that's just to the rear. See if there's a large amount of free play when you try to turn the rear prop (in neutral)`

i run it in 2wd unless offroad, so that rules the tr case out then!!

will have a play with it in neutral later & see how much play there is
