Title: TJ caliper replace / upgrade
Post by: Arno on December 09, 2013, 09:46:25 AM
I need to replace the front calipers on my TJ, and whilst at it, wonder if it worth upgrading them...

Seen blackmagic in the US, but they are $1000!!!

Is there any other options out there thats tried and tested without breaking the bank..??

Knuckles and calipers from a WJ.

The WJ has better brakes. This is a known conversion that with the steering gives you raised steering to avoid offroad damage.

am I correct by saying these would not fit 15" wheels - needs to go for 16" ?

Also, do I need to swap the rotors as well?

16" wheels required.....

complete axle from the bay and cheap 16" wheels from a scrapper, are the cheapest option.

next step would be specialist stuff from the US which as you've found can be spendy :icon_twisted:

just found this in my black anorak book of Jeep related stuff. Tis YJ specific but the main stuff will translate to TJ without a prob.

I'm just starting out with this and have gathered most of the bits, the way I understand it 15" rims with 4" BS will fit.. :017:  But Im not at the stage to confirm it 100% yet..only from what Ive read on Pirate etc..
You can re-drill the WJ Rotors to 5 x 4.5..or I think you can use Explorer rotors..

Fitting 15" wheels depends on the type of WJ caliper (there are two types), backspacing and the wheel itself shape and thickness. Stock 15s wouldn't fit over the Akebono calipers I fitted.

4play jeep do a replacement caliper.
It's disgned not to stick like the original ones do.

I've just had a set fitted to my TJ along with the uprated discs and pads and it's made a huge difference.

My jeep now stops quicker, and doesn't squeek.

Well, the brakes don't squeek, other bits do.;)

I had a look at 4playJeep and the only ones I can see is stock, but with a steel piston, this you referring too??

Yes. That's the ones.

Obviously not as big as an upgrade as getting bigger calipers.
But, in terms of replacement they are less prone to sticking.
