Post by: Dingo on April 15, 2006, 10:05:53 AM
That's about 21.75 MPG, used to get about  that out of mine, but only when driven very hard and on shortish journeys of about 15 miles.(late for work again).
Your getting your diesel cheap!! I buy in bulk and I can't get it that cheap.

110miles would cost about £10-£12 at 39ppl LPG

Don't spose that helps you though :?

Put a brick under your gas pedal. I could get about 33MPG if I tried, but most of the time it was about 22MPG, if the misses drove it she'd get around 29 MPG average.

if you are so bothered about fuel that you must keep asking the same question over and over again. maybe you shuld buy a mini. that would save ya a lot of typing and some fuel too.
Title:
Post by: Dingo on April 17, 2006, 11:03:14 PM
So you're not driving it hard, not short journeys, it's not smoking, no whistling noises, loss of power and your fuel tank ain't leaking, then you've got to be using poor quality diesel, VM's hate shitty diesel. Try using Shell if you've got one near you, by the Mc donald's I think, makes a hell of a difference using quality fuel.

 Rick.(director of shell uk)

you cant drive a big engine in a heavy jeep and expect huge mileage however you look at it

my old rangie only gave 12 mpg at best
Title:
Post by: MK1 on April 18, 2006, 07:44:36 PM
Not having a dig at anyone, but it reminds me of the shops in Beverly Hills.

Most have no prices on display and the saying is 'if you have to ask, then you can't afford it'

I see MPG as the same. You have a motor, it needs fuel, if you can't afford fuel either sell the motor or use it less.

I have ran 6 and 12 cylinder Jags, old Fiats and Alfas, tuned Mk2 Escorts, and others using this philosiphy.

Ok boys all in saying is that people on here have said that they get 25/30 mpg, mine is doing 20mpg and am driving steady, as for paying for fuel I have run rally cars for many years built the prepared them on a good day 6mpg,so don’t try to tell me about spending money on fuel because I have done it all and don’t forget the octane booster
Cool water for your rad and all the water injection .all I am asking is should it do 25/30mpg I am not to up on jeep electrics and the mapping for this engine, so if there is a factory plug in device to change/check mapping/tuning or do we not know this info.
I enjoy tinkering with older vehicles you can have a good go at them.
You should try a Subaru wrc rewire with active diffs and oil gear change and electronic handbrake lol that makes you scratch your head.
All I want is it to run how it should.
I apologise if you are board
Thanks. Rallyman

take it to a steelership and pay through the nose for the diognostics will be your only option if you just want to plug it in and find out whats happenin. still dont think you will get more mpg.

Rally Man

Where are you in the UK?  What sort of journeys do you do as part of your daily driving? With the greatest respect you don't try and drive it like a WRX do you?

Jeeps, like all 4x4's drink fuel (that includes Scoobys :D ) I owned a TD Cherry for 2 years and got @25-26 to the gallon , less off road - much less

Stew

Title:
Post by: Anonymous on April 18, 2006, 09:51:02 PM
Jest not RM the school run stop start kills fuel consumption on any big engined vehicle - give it some more welly out  and about and have a recheck on your figures
Title:
Post by: MK1 on April 18, 2006, 10:02:10 PM
Joking apart now....

Based on your figure of 115 miles to 23 ltrs thats 23 mpg. If Mr Average says 25-30 then you aint doing bad.

The upper figure would be at a constant and steady speed, the lower combined.

I have often found that most people stretch their MPG to prove what a good and safe driver they are.

Your slightly lower figure could be down to filters, injectors, valve or injector timing or general wear.

It is even possible to have identical new vehicles give different figures.

There's your answer for now....get used to real world driving for you and used to driving yer Jeep then check fuel consumption :D  :D

As in U52 etc.

Stew thought his truck was a submarine!

Really.  TD XJ's are THIRSTY!  I doubt very much if anyone has ever got 30mpg out of one in real world driving.  I'd expect 20-22 mpg on short trips to be much closer to the truth.

I'd love to get that kind of mpg out of my 4L.
Title:
Post by: rally_man on April 18, 2006, 11:01:21 PM
Ok two new tests .do they have hydraulic clutch operation as when sitting a stop line feels like fluid bypassing are they bitch to do and where do I get the bits.
Also offside wheel bearing noise can you change bearing or hole unit and where do I get the bits.
 :D
Title:
Post by: chrisjones on April 18, 2006, 11:06:33 PM
OK.

I'll pass on the clutch question, hving an auto, I haven't got a clue.

The front hubs are sealed units with non-replacable bearings.

Try Lighthouse, or one of the US. suppliers (4WD or Quadratec) in the suppliers section.

OR...............Shout VERY loudly in Kitchen Devils direction.  He may have a few good ones knocking around.

Title:
Post by: Manda on April 18, 2006, 11:15:46 PM
As far as I know Hydraulic clutch - yes.

Lighthouse do a master cylinder for '93 YJ's for £86 all in, I can't see it being much different for your XJ, if you have time to wait I'd use the yank suppliers. (like Chris said)

Where the hubs are concerned go with the more expensive ones, cheap is no bargain.

as for the clutch, i THINK they are hydraulic & lighthouse will do all the bits you need with next day delivery...

The clutch is hydraulic.. The OEM replacement comes as a complete slave/master assembly with the hose already assembled with fluid, bled and everything.
Title:
Post by: ivanidea on April 19, 2006, 09:00:29 AM
I used to get 28 to 32mpg on my 2.5 TD (as indicated on the trip computer).

Measuring between filling, I averaged 30mpg (non motorway driving & rural location).

Around town it was approx 28, and on the motorway, at a steady 60mph, I achived 32.

Rallyman, I get about 28mpg on the comp readout. Sometimes 26 sometimes 29~30 ish, so I say 28 as ave, that is a big mixture of driving, from town/city commuting to motorways running and A/B roads.

As has been said one thing that made me notice a difference was the fuel used. I used to use mostly Shell, but when a new Morrisons opened near me I used them, but have found I am getting less miles per tank, so have changed back to Shell and MPT has come back up.

I would expect 400 miles from a tankfull. Fuel warning light coming on at about 380 ish and safe to run to 400 if required. Although I have had over 420 to a tankfull. With Morrisons fuel it was 340....

Hope that helps..
Title:
Post by: tim_aka_tim on April 20, 2006, 12:53:31 PM
Not an XJ, but the 3.1TD in my WJ is a VM (a 2.5 with an extra cylinder), and with my usual 50/50 town/motorway driving, it consistantly gets 380 miles ona a tank of supermarket but 450 on a tank of Shell.

I get 16MPG from the TJ :(

As you seem technically competent, I assume you have changed the air filter, fuel filter and alike, ckecked your injectors (Do the 2.5 diseasals have them?) etc and been through the normal stuff? Is your clutch slipping at all?

Think someone said that it's a bosch pump on the Cherry, maybe you could look at getting the settings checked out on the pump. Any smoke when pulling away.

BTW, insulting peeps on here is not the best way to get help.... Help is never far away on Birty's, but you have to take the piss taking too :) Tis Birty Ethics....
