Anybody know if you can adjust the kickdown cable on a auto XJ, I assume it has one? It gets to a hill and feels very lazy to change down.
-
Yup, it's dead easy and makes a massive difference!
Pull the resonator box (if you still have it) off from on top of the throttle body (or just loosen it if you have small fingers!). You can then see the cables coming from the throttle valve. One of them (the one closest to the front, I think) has a button on it roughly where the cable goes over the valve cover (should be obvious). Next to the button there's a black bit sticking out along the cable, in the direction of the throttle body.
Push the button down, and whilst holding it push the black sticky-out bit into the housing that it comes out of. Release the button, then press it again and still holding it open the throttle valve fully. The black bit should pull back out to the right position. Release the button and you're done.
Hopefully that should make sense, but it's difficult to explain without pictures!

:ace: is there any amount to move the cable or does it do it on its own? Also does yours kickdown twice on hills with cruise control on?
Thanks again

The cable adjusts itself to the right length when you open the throttle with the button held down.
Yeah, I think mine sometimes does kick down twice on cruise control, but I've not used it enough lately to remember how often. After adjusting the kickdown the XJ always seems to put itself in the right gear for hills, without seeming like it's struggling!
It's honestly so easy to adjust the kickdown that I do it every time I'm working on anything under the bonnet!

Gold star bryn easy peasy :icon_biggrin:

Excellent, has it made a nice difference??
-
Yeah it doesn't bog down and now changes gear when it should.

Done this yesterday at the mates. Genuinely that easy, we weren't sure if we'd actually done anything. Made a hell on a difference on the drive home. :D cheers.
