First question is confirmation that the 4.2 and the V8 alternators are different?
I did a search on here and found some posts saying they were the same, but mine is duff and when I went to swap to one of my spares but the hole at the top where the bolt goes through is smaller than the one that came off ...... :017:
Any thoughts before I get pillaged by lightys for a new one....?
-
alternator is the same, brackets are different, did notice different makes had different hole sizes but just used a different bolt
-
You could try senting a (Hali)fax to someone who may have a spare one...
-
Just redrill the 4.2 one to the same size as the v8 one! Easy
-

Power tools, modifying, BD.....
Think about that for a minute...
-
Drilled a bigger hole, didn't break anything :icon_eek:
Fitted it and ............. The fuckin elec connectors are on the wrong side and no slack in cable :die:
I hate this shit :banghead:
-
Oohhh that's unlucky...
-
All of my spares are the same :010:
-
did you see the relocation I did on the 360? that could help plus keeps it out of the water.
other than that it's an easy job to extend the wires
-
I decided to get a new super powerful jobby from USAutomotive - seems the one I wanted was only specific to a 401 for one particular year
I need to clear out spares - im only gonna put new stuff on my baby
-
Perfect for this situation - cheers CM

:timmy:
right, new alternator turned up and I had to drill that one out to fit as well - bit scary but all is good and now have a Jeep that charges the battery :icon_super:
however, probably due to me bein a lot hamfisted my incredible strength I managed to snap the bolt that goes into the bottom of the alternator through the bracket :eusa_doh:
So, I have bodged been ingenious in the short term by puttin a nut & bolt thru the bracket itself to hold the alternator high enuff, however that does mean I have some belt squeaking, so long story short is does anyone know the size of the bolt I snapped so I can get the alternator in the right position?
Cheers
-
Pics???
-
no but ..
-
I am v.confused now....have you broken the bolt in the alternator casing?
-
yes but that was in the old alternator
-
If you haven't broke the bolt in the casing then whats to stop you drilling that out and putting a long metric bolt with a nut (nyloc would be good) on the end.
Its not like the warranty will be any good now you have drilled it anyway :icon_rolleyes:
-
yes but that was in the old alternator
You snapped the bolt in the old alternator and not when you were fitting the new one?....

coz i just thought if someone knew what size thread bolt when in i would at least try and do one part properly :003:
-
No idea then without looking :003:
Put a long M6 bolt and nut through it temporary until someone can be arsed to find out for you, i have a funny feeling they may be metric as well :017:
-
I have one I think will fit but Im just concerned about winding it thru with a spanner and fucking it up
-
Just get your wife or one of your boys to do it.

so essentially if i fuck it up with the wrong size bolt my life isnt ruined?
-
Imagine the alternator is actually someone you are chatting up in a bar in Thailand.
The correct size bolt(or girl) will slip in easily and tighten up nicely and will leave you feeling good with yourself.
The wrong size bolt(may not actually be a girl!) may start off feeling correct, but soon you will feel that something is not quite right and everything is too tight and somehow it not the correct fitment.
This leaves you with two choices...
1:You can back off before its too late, make your apologies and call it a day and leave the job to someone else.
2:Blindly keep going and really get yourself in a mess, OH! but by then its too late and everything is crossthreaded and cockled.
Yes you may feel less of a man, and yes you may feel the need to scrub yourself clean and pray no one finds out what you have done, but we wont think any less of you. :003:
-
The previous posting was extracted from the soon to be published "Isle of Mans Phuket and see" (tales of a man in a campervan series 1) novel
-
Yes it will mend!!!!
-
Looks like a trip to b&q for a selection of bolts then :015:
nice analogy tho :003:
-
Don't do b&q, they only do bolts made of cheese. Google fasteners companies near you, take what's left of the snapped bolt that fits and the length you need and talk to the people there. My local guy's a miserable sod but has imperial, metric, fine, coarse, all manner of washers and nuts and can normally sort my problems out.
-
cheers James, one just a mile or so away

yes bulldog listen to Dave.... he is speaking from experience! the bit about the Thailand girl/man that is! the extract was actually taken from "tight or not? ladyboys of Thailand" author "Dave the sparky" updated revision 3 released by puff-in books UK. he is just trying to upset my good Friend the right honerable IMO for some perverse reason! shame on you sparky :eusa_naughty:
-
bro is gonna bring back a bucket of UNC bolts and will see what I can find
-
I put my money on 3/8", with a little side bet on 7/16", as 1/2" would be just too easy!
But UNC or UNF that's a whole new thread!
-
5/16 UNC which is 7.93mm for visually checking (actually 7.9375mm just in case J33pKY is reading this and has his calculator at the ready :003:).
Thats what my spanking new remanufactured alternator is tapped out to anyway...
-
Oh well, never mind, "I grovel corrected"!
I'll just console myself that at least it wasnt 1/2"
-
HANG-ON!! This is a nut and boult, BD will be in a place far from the commie commune on this.
-
Nice work Mr Sparky :greggmo:
-
I'm sure Andrew at Lighthouse could go into more detail about the correct bolt than you dave! You haunt given the exact length or finish in your half ass description....
-
exact length or finish in your half ass description....
This must be "KY" speak.....
-
Its about 1 inch in length and the one i have has a yellow passivated finish.
The bolt is also similar in both appearance and finish..........
-
passivated.....?
-
Are you doing this on purpose???
BD information portal 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passivation_%28chemistry%29)
-
Anyway its a set screw a bolt has a shank (https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jonrb.com%2Femoticons%2Fspotter.gif&hash=277f6ccdeae0445e08ac9d1c95c9e0817aaeb828)
-
Huh, go figure - summink new every day
so no nut - of course - you are right - I remember now
-
passivated.....?
don't you mean zinc plating which technically isn't passivated since it will rust. don't forget you will need an imperial adjustable spanner to tighten the nuts
-
Come on Dave keep up with the lesson(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jonrb.com%2Femoticons%2Fteacher.gif&hash=2e1c27b0c3166047120eb38d8f2952ad64e804a8)
So far Bulldog has hopefully learnt:
That the item we think he needs is a 5/16 UNC x 1inch set screw.
Helicoiling can repair broken threads.
Passivating is a process to make something more corrosion resistant than standard Zinc plating.
If he is ever in Thailand to make sure that he checks the contents of the package before opening.
Todays lesson after lunch will be the correct torque setting of the set screw and setting the tension of the belt, but before that the fundamental priciple of which way to rotate the setscrew so it tightens in the first place. :003:
-
Its about 1 inch in length and the one i have has a yellow passivated finish.
You must have misunderstood! I wanted to know about the bolt you were describing! Not the contents off your underpants! ever though I believe it was Brown passivated when you left Mr iom camper that morning.
-
I'm a bit worried i will have something useful pushed outa my brain if i remember any of this :umn:
I have imperial sockets, but I think a 13 spanner fitted last time
The belt just needs to be tighter than it is but torque settings for the bolt obviously v important for a man of unfeasible strength like myself
This big ass kangaroo borrows my tshirts for a night out
-
Just get Mrs bulldog to nip it up if your not strong enough
-
you may have missed that part about me snapping lumps of metal in half :celebrate:
TBH not knowing when to stop tightening and then snapping is a consistent problem - one of the myriad of reasons why spanners are not my friend
Changing an alternator turns into an expensive and complicated fortnights worth of mental endurance
-
Don't confuse him now :icon_rolleyes:
Told ya !!! :hysterical:
-
Are you one of those dudes who keep tightening until it suddenly goes loose again?
-
Errrm maybe :icon_redface:
-
..........then you aren't alone in the world.
-
:hysterical:
-
success :icon_super:
1/2 UNC was the dood req :greggmo:
Now when Im sitting at the lights and a crowd gathers and points in awe at the Chief I wont have the embarrassment of the cacophony of what sounds like a 1000 mice being strangled :003:
-
BD, UNC bolts and spanners with no accidents.
I never thought I would type those words in the same sentence :icon_super:
-
1/2 UNC even his alternator has to have a bigger bolt holding it on.
Thats also the size of his wheel nuts and hes had plenty of practice with those :003:
-
:hysterical: FFS Sparky is right - 5/16 UNC :bangtard:
-
has he found god? :017: or has he made a pact with Satan? :icon_twisted: they have trained monkeys to fly space ships.... :003: does he get a birtys blue peter badge? :icon_biggrin: well done the dawg................ :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super:

Dont get accustomed to all this hardcore mechanics from me tho - once the speedo is fixed Im going back to ignoring it all :003:
Altho I will have two more questions:
Last time I did an oil change was about 30 yrs ago - is it still appropriate to hammer a screwdriver thru the filter and use that to twist it off or has the metal in them changed to have less robustness?
And apart from bring it with me to to help the CF14 fire - what do you all do with the old oil?

I had to use the screwdriver trick to get an old oil filter off the XJ a while back, and as for old oil, I put it in a tub then hide it in the parents garage where they're unlikely to come across it for a while! :003:
-
you may be on too something as my folks are moving soon - we can leave it for the new owners :003:
-
oil filter straps (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laser-Filter-Wrench-Strap-1-2-Drive-Oil-Filters-Tools-WorkShop-Garage-/290714284469?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item43afebf1b5) are very cheap and your recycling centre will take your old oil, mine has a limit of 2 gal per trip so bear that in mind
-
cheers dood
was ebaying for new filters and noticed K&N are doing them with a nut on the bottom now
-
Use a filter wrench (what type is down to you) The screwdriver hammered through the filter sides can end in tears when you crack the mounting .....
-
chain wrench is preferred
Fabric ones attached to a socket....tend to slide

not if you put some sandpaper under the strap :003:

looks less complicated for someone like me
-
NO get the HP-2003 it is fitted with a non return valve, (the black ones don't) stops the oil draining if your stationry on a sharp incline.

will you have the swing to use it?
or in other words how much space is there around the filter in the engine bay?
-
fair amount I think but will get a look in the morning
cheers for the heads up on the filter as had spotted the black ones were cheaper
-
Are you gonna put the correct grade engine oil in BD?
http://www.millersoils.co.uk/whichoil.asp (http://www.millersoils.co.uk/whichoil.asp)
Lists the Wagoneer on there as well

i spray my old oil under my trucks
-
i spray my old oil under my trucks
don't say things like to BD, he'll end up spraying his brakes with grease to stop em squeaking :banghead:
-
:iagree: he does almost need a blue peter badge though :hysterical:
-
I could roller it on but spraying is a bit ghay - what am I rolling?
-
preferred weapon of choice.......chain wrench to remove filters
strap wrenches slip.
filter sockets round the edges of the filter
screwdriver through the filter....more pain when the canister falls off and the base plate stays in place
-
this may sound over the top but i have 7 filter tools ranging in type to deal with all variations of bind that can happen with filters
-
Will buy a chain thing 2mrw
-
I dunno wot happenin to me :010:
-
Get some gloves as well dont want to get that nasty oil on your manicured hands now :018:
-
right, wish me luck, about to commence first oil & oil filter change in 29 yrs :100:
I have a removal tool so hopefully it wont end in tears (thats fucked that then!!)
been puttin it off but im goin here 2mrw: http://www.billingaquadrome.com/event-detail/14 with JOC so it can be ignored no more :010:
-
Got to have at least 5 filter removal tools to cover the filters on cars and bikes. A chain wrench on a ratchet is the old faithfull
-
Success :icon_super:
Didn't take as much oil as I thought it would tho
altho did try and change the fairlead to a new black one courtesy of YT only to find it was smaller than mine once i had got it all off :banghead:
