Speedo died on the Chief - pointers etc please gents?
Muchly :greggmo:
-
Check the end that attaches to gearbox and make sure it hasn't moved or the gear has stripped.
-
:iagree:
the speed o cable can seize up as well

:iagree:

Especially if it's been sat, unused for a while....it pulls out from the bottom anyway, so easily checked.
-
Ok cheers - so where on the gearbox and are then any other cables near it that will spell impending doom if I touch/pull/break them?
-
Normally, but not always, at the arse end of the box, near where the rear drive shalf attaches. I'm not familiar with your tranny set up, so not positive. The cable outer should be about as thick as a ciggie plus a little bit.

Oh dear, there we go again :icon_rolleyes:
The gearbox is the metally thingamibob that is bolted to the large whirly whatchamacallit in the front that makes lots of noise. :hysterical:

Have a look here.

if your fuel gauge still works, down load a speed app for the phone. No mucky hands and no chance of removing the wrong fingy
-
yeah I have got a gps app - and im running about +5mph fast on the speedo
was workin fine so i will at least have a little delve 2mrw
cheers for the diagram Bazz
and Dutch :wave-fingersmiely: :hysterical:
-
Not only that but as the Haupt Sturmbahn Fuhrer of the WTFIAS club he is teetering dangerously on the brink of becoming an equal to us mere mortals :icon_eek:
-
that had occured to me but as Im breaking stuff as I fix it Im kinda safe :003:
-
buy cheap spanners to start with, when you break them it is then time to replace with better quality

Both end of the cable appear to be where they should be and are secure
I attached the transfer case end to my drill and span it but no movement on the dial (no idea if that was a workable idea)
Next thoughts?
-
When you spun it with the drill, was the top end rotating as well??
-
Yes i thought of that as i packed up - the top end was still in the rear of the speedo - sounded like it was moving but I will have to pull it out next and physically check
-
Make sure you use the drill on low speed when hooked to the cable, especially with the top end connected to the speedo.
-
Now he tells me :eusa_doh:
luckily the batt was near flat on the drill
-
Shall I come over and hold your little hand??
-
You can come over and do some work ya lazy bugger :003:
-
What?...and put you out of a job? That wouldn't be the right thing to do. :icon_winkle:
-
To stop you clocking your rent a hearse, the speedo will only work one way as well BD, you may want to try the drill in reverse too :icon_winkle:
-
yup done both ways - not a twitch on the speedo accordin to Stan
-
The mystery is solved - cable snapped bout 6" back from speedo
Luckily I have a new one in the spares mountain but advice on fitting to make my life easy? Can I zip tie new to old and pull thru or will it get stuck somewhere? Or just pull the inner cable out of the old and push thru the new?
:100: :003:
-
Stick lots of grease on the new one(or vaseline), feed it through gently, turning as you go...don't force it!
-
cheers - job for Friday then
-
Um, been there and got the Tee shirt for being a daft bugger on that one!
It's not difficult to replace the complete cable including the sheath and it stops you finding that the new one is too bloody long when you're nearly finished.
And it also stops you wiping grease all over the place as you wrestle it down the old outer sheath that has probably got something wrong with it anyway, 'cos surely you've got to ask yourself why the last cable broke?
Your choice: 10 minute fix and replace again next month or 1/2 hour and the jobs done for good.
-
Sort of agree with you..but even with a complete new inner AND outer, you need to pull the inner out and lubricate it properly before fitting. They fail for two main reasons:
Lack of lube
Kinking or damage to the outer sheath
I've replaced roughly a dozen of these on my own vehicles over the years and in almost all cases the failure occurred within 6" of the gauge connection and it was almost always rusty around the separation point.

so is there an easy way? Can i cable tie them to each other and pull it thru? I suppose that may be a question for someone with a full size
-
B D it should pus through without any difficulty if there is no break or damage to the outer , just pull out the old inner and like the guy says smear of lube and it should slide through without any difficulty, if you do struggle then chances are the outer is damaged and snagging once through you should be able to rotate the inner cable with your fingers as it is the spinning inner cable which is the connection from speedo to gearbox :icon_biggrin:, the outer is just a carrier
-
easy fix to do the whole cable, inner and outer, if I had the right jeffin cable :banghead:
I have a new speedo cable for a LHD, which goes to the cruise control box and so is only about 3ft long, whereas my cruise control box is about 6ft away :eusa_doh:
more of my hard earned will be going lightys way :011:
-
that's the life of a jeep owener
-
And next on the list is indicators that decided that life wasnt for them half way to Northampton today :011:
Ideas and direction please?
-
Start with the easy checks......
Bulbs
Bad connections
Flasher relay
Fuses
Indicator switch on column
You'll Sort it :icon_super:
-
Cheers Jez, starter list for next weekend :greggmo:
-
given the age of the truck a bad earth sounds most likely
-
Indicators working again :icon_super:
Good job i have balls of steel just drove up the M20 in a storm with windscreen wipers that go up but then won't come back down - they can be forced back down by hand and up they go again but wont return :banghead:
motor?
-
I'll give you £50 for the truck? :97:
-
More likely some joint worn or seized I would think.

linkage bushings most likely

can we remember its me please :017:
more specific guidance with pictures would help :003:
-
Instead of replacing the speedo cable, how about fitting one of those Dakota Digital Dash thingies from the US?
About £400 plus import duty.
An insignificant sum to a man of your great wealth.
All the sensors are with it including the speedometer pulser unit.
And there's lots of other trick stuff you can connect to it
-
wipers first
-
Yes Mr juggler.. What a cracking idea.. With his diminishing wealth he could treat us too!!!!! :098:
-
Less jibber jabber and more rescue of my wipers please or im gonna miss breakout if it's raining :jpshakehead:
-
You in a position to cannibalise the relevant bits?
-
No idea what I need to do or what it looks like yet mate
-
Me neither
Mine whirred and clanked a bit but never stopped.
I think you're going to have to pull the arms off the splined shafts then remove the louvred panel.
Rusty screws :banghead:
-
Rain-X the windscreen, drive to Breakout, let us take it to bits.

It's dead a rain x job and a plea for help - thought I would have a look this morning and can't even get the frickin wipers off :banghead: :icon_redface: :hysterical:
-
You need a puller....or you'll break some'at...... Don't use your hammer :icon_twisted:
-
I have retired gracefully having been soundly thrashed :003:

Uh oh, sounds well fooked. Spray a bit of wd40 on stuff if we're to stand any hope of getting it apart.
-
Overheating AGAIN :banghead:
Small oil leak from timing case area / flywheel
AA man pinitially pronounced diff of leak :jpshakehead:
Then stuck his finger in coolant reservoir and said that's v rusty - must be a head gasket or cracked head and then fucked off :017:
-
dump the coolant and refill with 50/50 mix of water and pink stuff. then add a bottle of K-Seal or liquid metal, that should either sort the issue or not. If sorted then it will give you time to source funds for a replacement head
-
on a lighter note mine now runs with throttle either full on or off. running on gas now returns approx 10mpg god knows what it is on petrol.
-
Rear tire repaired - Leathers laid out - seems another good day weatherwise.
A30-M5 here I come :icon_super:
-
Sooo, is this part important? Does it need putting back on?
It abandoned ship this morning :003:
-
Have you got one the other side covering the inner side of the disc ......cos that is what it looks like.
And no if it's that you don't need them cos they clog with mud and ruin your day. :icon_super:
-
Cool - no work sounds good to me :003:
It is off the disc by the way
-
That's what it looks like...if so, take the opposite one off also.
-
So there is work after all :011:
Its in the plans Bazz :003:
-
It will fall off at some point when it's rotton enough..
-
No rot ya cheeky monkey
TBH made me larf havin to stop the traffic to pick up bits of truck :hysterical:
-
It's always fun driving down street, trailing a loads of sparks because only half of it let go and the rest of it folded up.
