Check the end that attaches to gearbox and make sure it hasn't moved or the gear has stripped.

:iagree:
the speed o cable can seize up as well

Especially if it's been sat, unused for a while....it pulls out from the bottom anyway, so easily checked.

Ok cheers - so where on the gearbox and are then any other cables near it that will spell impending doom if I touch/pull/break them?

Normally, but not always, at the arse end of the box, near where the rear drive shalf attaches. I'm not familiar with your tranny set up, so not positive. The cable outer should be about as thick as a ciggie plus a little bit.

Oh dear, there we go again  :icon_rolleyes:

The gearbox is the metally thingamibob that is bolted to the large whirly whatchamacallit in the front that makes lots of noise. :hysterical:

Both end of the cable appear to be where they should be and are secure

I attached the transfer case end to my drill and span it but no movement on the dial (no idea if that was a workable idea)

Next thoughts?
Title: Re: Today's ballache
Post by: bgbazz on February 23, 2014, 02:03:41 PM
When you spun it with the drill, was the top end rotating as well??
Title: Re: Today's ballache
Post by: Bulldog67 on February 23, 2014, 02:15:57 PM
Yes i thought of that as i packed up - the top end was still in the rear of the speedo - sounded like it was moving but I will have to pull it out next and physically check
Title: Re: Today's ballache
Post by: bgbazz on February 23, 2014, 02:25:52 PM
Make sure you use the drill on low speed when hooked to the cable, especially with the top end connected to the speedo.

The mystery is solved - cable snapped bout 6" back from speedo

Luckily I have a new one in the spares mountain but advice on fitting to make my life easy? Can I zip tie new to old and pull thru or will it get stuck somewhere? Or just pull the inner cable out of the old and push thru the new?

 :100: :003:
Title: Re: Today's ballache

Stick lots of grease on the new one(or vaseline), feed it through gently, turning as you go...don't force it!

Um, been there and got the Tee shirt for being a daft bugger on that one!

It's not difficult to replace the complete cable including the sheath and it stops you finding that the new one is too bloody long when you're nearly finished.

And it also stops you wiping grease all over the place as you wrestle it down the old outer sheath that has probably got something wrong with it anyway, 'cos surely you've got to ask yourself why the last cable broke?

Your choice: 10 minute fix and replace again next month or 1/2 hour and the jobs done for good.
Title: Re: Today's ballache
Post by: bgbazz on March 05, 2014, 05:51:33 PM
Sort of agree with you..but even with a complete new inner AND outer, you need to pull the inner out and lubricate it properly before fitting. They fail for two main reasons:

Lack of lube

Kinking or damage to the outer sheath

I've replaced roughly a dozen of these on my own vehicles over the years and in almost all cases the failure occurred within 6" of the gauge connection and it was almost always rusty around the separation point.

so is there an easy way? Can i cable tie them to each other and pull it thru? I suppose that may be a question for someone with a full size

Post by: mark on March 05, 2014, 11:32:42 PM
B D it should pus through without any difficulty if there is no break or damage to the outer , just pull out the old inner and like the guy says  smear of lube and it should slide through without any difficulty, if you do struggle then chances are the outer is damaged and snagging once through you should be able to rotate the inner cable with your fingers as it is the spinning inner cable which is the connection from speedo to gearbox  :icon_biggrin:, the outer is just a carrier
Title: Re: Today's ballache

easy fix to do the whole cable, inner and outer, if I had the right jeffin cable :banghead:

I have a new speedo cable for a LHD, which goes to the cruise control box and so is only about 3ft long, whereas my cruise control box is about 6ft away :eusa_doh:

more of my hard earned will be going lightys way :011:

Start with the easy checks......
Bulbs
Bad connections
Flasher relay
Fuses
Indicator switch on column

You'll Sort it :icon_super:

Instead of replacing the speedo cable,  how about fitting one of those Dakota Digital Dash thingies from the US?

About £400 plus import duty.

An insignificant sum to a man of your great wealth.

All the sensors are with it including the speedometer pulser unit.

And there's lots of other trick stuff you can connect to it

I think you're going to have to pull the arms off the splined shafts then remove the louvred panel.

Overheating AGAIN :banghead:

Small oil leak from timing case area / flywheel

AA man pinitially pronounced diff of leak  :jpshakehead:

Then stuck his finger in coolant reservoir and said that's v rusty - must be a head gasket or cracked head and then fucked off :017:

dump the coolant and refill with 50/50 mix of water and pink stuff. then add a bottle of K-Seal or liquid metal, that should either sort the issue or not. If sorted then it will give you time to source funds for a replacement head

It's always fun driving down street, trailing a loads of sparks because only half of it let go and the rest of it folded up.
