Title: Two boring questions...
Post by: Brynjaminjones on February 24, 2014, 08:03:26 PM
I thought I'd combine, to save you all from the chore of having to read them both!  :003:

1. My AW4 tranny is occasionally slipping. Usually when cold, in reverse, up hill. It takes a second or two to engage, then goes, then slips. I give it a rev and it clunks back in and is then fine. Engaging drive is also starting to take a little bit longer. Am I right in thinking that the first port of call would be a fluid change?

2. I randomly wondered if I should be greasing any grease nipples underneath the XJ. My mechanic once greased one on one of the steering components, and my steering knock went away! I'm (somewhat embarrassingly!) completely clueless about this! Where do I grease, what grease do I use, where do I get a grease gun, are grease guns universal??

Cheers guys 8-)

Change oil and filter, then go to bed, grab both balls and prey !!

Grease any and everything in sight, remember though two nipples are apparent !!

Excellent, thanks guys!
How do I make sure I get a grease gun that fits a Jeep?
And also, might greasing it make my steering feel nicer??  :003:

Grease guns can be bought quite cheaply.  Have a look at Machine Mart.

Also worth getting a needle adapter for the recessed greasing points.

all grease nipples are the same size, fit the gun squeeze the trigger until the grease starts to seep from the item. Check the level of the oil in the gearbox, remember to check when engine hot and in neutral. top up down the dipstick if required

Picked up this one for a couple of quid at the farm machinery auction @ Truro couple of years ago.

I would have thought one of the first things students learned was how to grease (lubricate) nipples  :003:

I had creaky steering a while back and the guys advised greasing the nipples.

I bought a Grease Gun and problem was solved. I now do them all every couple of months just to be on the safe side.

A big thanks to Dutch for greasing my nipples!

The steering feels smoother and noticeably less rattly and clunky now :003:

Dutch, I also managed to limp all the way to Falmouth then back to Plymouth without the nail letting too much air out of my tyre!
