Well my 1996 4.0 Ltd grand needs a new gearbox.
Ive found one at a breakers (as soon as its fitted its getting traded in). The problem is they need to know what type mine is.
My haynes manual says the number is on the side just above the sump but i cannot read this as its all worn away.
Is there any other way i can find this out?
Regards
Mike

It's a 42 RE. In the UK, you'll only find the right one in a '96-'98 Grand Cherokee 4.0.

thanks, i was told by the breakers that there is few types on this age vehicle.
I read in the haynes manual that it says it on the side, i have managed to read mine now and it says
PK 5211 84242669 3244
this bears no resemblance to the manual which says it should state the type and year etc.
ill tell them its a 42 RE
thanks again.

Some of the '98 models have a deeper oil pan, but they are interchangable with the '96/'97 versions, and they hold more oil, which isn't a bad thing.
