Title: 3rd Brake Light
Post by: Mike2909 on March 23, 2014, 03:06:14 PM
I have the MOT for the TJ coming up at the end of April.I have been told that I will need a 3rd brake light to pass. I have found these 2 wires behind my spare wheel. Would they be for the 3rd brake light?
They make contact when the tailgate is closed but I have no power there at the moment.

I have a 2001 TJ, which originally came with the 3rd brake light, but since the spare is kept inside the light was removed.

Never had any problem with the mot.

Those wires are indeed for the third brake light, but it's not required for the MOT. This is from the MOT testers manual...

Vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1971 must be fitted with two obligatory stop lamps.

Additional stop lamps fitted and connected must be tested. Where extra lamps are fitted and there is doubt as to whether they are connected, the benefit of this doubt should be given to the presenter.

The third brake light is required in the States and I moved mine to shine out of the middle of the spare. When the jeep came to the Uk the inspectors changed this so it was the fog light since I didn't have one.

Thanks guys, that's what you get when you ask a 20 year old who works at the test centre.
