Right so I currently have a 2.5 petrol xj 98, I find it a little under powered however I prefer the manual gearbox for offroad. Now I have been thinking would it be possible (and how simple would it be) to put a 4.0 in the vehicle onto the manual gearbox. Would the gear box handle the power? Would the engine fit directly onto the gear box?
Any advice would be appreciated.

its not a simple swap if thats what your hoping,
search online will be the best source of information, stateside forums should be able to offer more information

Easier to put manual box in an auto 4.0l than a 4.0l in a 2.5 cherry.
Ax15 manual box came with 4.0 on wranglers and import jeeps.
Flywheel, clutch ,pedals ,propshafts and electrical fettling needed (nss)

And diesels

And diesels
somebody has to use the dirty word - you will set everyone off agan :violence: :violence:

awww come on diesels are great, good power loads of torque
except when it's a VM lump but there again if you get the 3ltr from the schmitt road sweeper then that should be a better unit.

The easiest way is to sell the 2.5, buy a 4.0. Then buy a 2.5 diesel with a f**ked engine, use the gearbox, stick, pedal assembly and clutch hydraulics. Also use the 3.73 axles off the diesel which gives perfect gearing on 31"tyres with a manual box. You can then choose either the 242 transfer box off the 4.0 or the 231 from the diesel. You may have juggle propshafts depending on what lift you are running, and you will need a 4.0 manual TJ or XJ clutch and flywheel. Don't forget to install a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft as well. Manual 4.0 XJs rock by the way :003:

manual 4ltr = power slides on tap

Weird old world ain't it ???
Tis now cheaper to put together an ass kicking XJ or even ZJ with the purchase of a few broken donors than it is to search out that TJ you think you want.........???
I think a 1 Ton ZJ with lots of chassis stiffening and cage and either removable doors or cut down doors is the way forward........ It's got the wheelbase we all crave.........
Argue and debate at will...............
I'll be back after dinner :icon_biggrin:

told you ZJ's are the way forwards
