Title: TJ brake drums
Post by: georgen on May 20, 2014, 07:08:45 PM
As anyone had any probs with there brake drums, mine look like at some point been driven with loose wheels, the holes are elongated and the shoulders of the studs and the studs are damaged, also plate part (the bit with the stud holes in) is buckled so I have just ordered 10 new studs and looking for new drums, just wondered is this a common problem or one confined to peeps who run with loose nuts?

That appears to be loose wheel syndrome. We recently had a truck at work where the wheel nuts worked loose and showed the same symptoms.
Elongated stud holes and knackered studs points to the loose wheel.

Loose nuts certainly sounds like sommat not to run down the street with, nearly as bad as saggy bits I reccon.

WRT Wheel nuts:
My sister had a Triumph serviced by the stealers once and then came round to ask if the rumbling noise from the front that only stopped when she put her foot on the brake was serious!

BL really were in a class of there own werent they!

when I saw them i thought loose nuts but thought I would ask the question to see if it was common as the front plate of the drums is rather femme to say the least, I have just tightened the rear axle up that was moving and that's more worrying, so went through every nut and bolt at the rear to check, already done the front when I noticed pan rod arm bracket moving, think problem here is there's car tight then there is truck tight.
well previous owner might of been happy with everything moving about but I am not, I will get there in the end hopefully with it still retaining all its parts lol.

If you dont mind Wildwood, eventually want to go to disk so was a little peeved to having to buy new, also any details on the disk swap  :icon_winkle:

www.stu offroad is the website...... Look under suspension and his is a driveway done at home conversion, I followed it and it works like the spendy ones......you just need the ZJ axle for donor parts. It really is cheap to do........no better braking though, just less mud prone offroad

I'll look in the workshop for the drums

Oops, just had a look.....
Think they got weighed in last summer, sorry about that.....

Yes I had a 44 from a TJ on my YJ...... Had to wrack my brains, the shafts I gave away from the ZJ and it was the brake stuff that went to the conversion.

I had a loose wheel issue; caused by the mechanic over tightening the nuts and studs were busting. Not only did I have to pay for the studs to be replaced but also the remaining locknuts had to be weld socket removed!
