Anyone running on veg oil? Seen talk of people running their 2.5 diesels on veg oil or mix off.

How do you get those prices? Cheapest I have seen is £1 a litre

Tesco £6 for 5L of sunflower or rapeseed - or 2 for £9

you can also get soya oli at Costco / macro for a bit less

Just wondered if it was worth doing, more economical and can you just go right ahead and start using it without modifications.

MPG should drop a little - say 5 to 10%, but saving covers it.
Just pour it into the tank and away you go.
start at 25% oil, and then 50%
some say to keep a spare fuel filter with you - I've have been fine with veg oil, but put bio in and within 100 miles the filter clogs due to crap being pulled out of the tank/pipes.
I have run at 95/100% veg in summer - but don't both with it this high anymore.
Engine will run much quieter - and if you ever have problems with MOT emissions - you won't have using veg.

Cheers for that, may give it a go, have heard about the oil stripping the crap out the pipes, some mention disposable inline filters so will take this onboard.

I have run anything from 25% up to 100% veg, with no issues.
I do use acetone as an additive though, 100ml on a full tank, and do this regardless of what fuel I use.
Veg oil is obviously cheaper, but is also thicker. I have had no issues in terms of pulling crap through the fuel lines (that I've noticed anyway), but when the ambient temp drops, then it can take a while to start the engine, especially if the temp is below 5 degrees centigrade (and certainly for below freezing) - this is when I run a much richer diesel mix.

at one point I had over 1000L of new oil stored in 1L bottles - now I just buy and use when on offer in supermarkets

So the VM diesel lump in the XJ has no apparent issues when fuelled by straight vegetable oil :017:
I am absolutely amazed TBH considering the low opinion that folk generally have of them.
I'd just like to point out that if you stick the stuff in other diesels there may not be such a happy outcome.
AFAIK anything with a CAV Lucas rotary pump (series LR, Mahindra ) has natural rubber seals inside the pump which are degraded by the vegetable oil.

Over my way, during winter, temps down around the minus 15 or lower, petrol added to diesel seems to be normal practice. I never tried that mix in my 2.5CRD mainly because it had a very efficient fuel heater which never let me down.

'Winterdiesel' is a well known thing on the continent. Either supplied as is at the pump or by adding 5 ltrs of petrol to a full tank.
I prevents the paraffin in the diesel from solidifying and blocking the fuel system at very low temperatures.

You are quite right Dutch. As I understand it...it changes the waxing component of cold diesel.

Good - CRD = common rail diesel, and oil = scrap engine, pressures are too high to run veg without major mods and twin tanks, and then not really worth it due to high repair costs.

Just about a perfect engine to run on veg (as old Mercs are) indirect injection (helps prevent ring gumming) and mechanical bosch fuel pump :icon_super: :icon_super: :icon_super: - also even has an heated fuel filter
Old tech diesel engine - you just need to listen to one to realise that :strum:

I used to run the Korando and Musso 2.9 TD on pure veg oil during the summer then mixing 50:50 with diesel during the winter.
In line filter changes at regular intervals a must and carry a spare just in case you need to change.
Cheap as chips plus the smell. If you can I would as its considerably cheaper. Law states 2500 litres a year. :017:

I wonder if the Isuzu C240 lump in my CJ7 diesel would be tolerant of the stuff :017:
IIRC the injector pump is a licence built copy of a Bosch unit.
Deffo indirect injection.
But then if it damages the injectors I dread to think how much for a recon :011:

so whats the deal with the the bacteria issues where you get effectively a live jelly monster growing in the tank ? that arrantly stays in the system after you stop running veg oil :017: :017:

Ive had no issues of the dreaded jelly mould and ran on veg oil for years. Regular in line filter changes stops the clogging up

Buy packs of 10 from eblag. I put them before main fuel filter. You can see when they are getting clogged up from debris in the tank. Unscrew jubilee clips and put the new one in. Comes with directional arrow for ease of fitments. Hope this helps

I've been reliably informed that a cup of petrol added to every tank full of veg oil stops the jelly problem. He is a cafe owner and recycles his deep fryer oil through a series of paper coffee filters before adding it to the fuel tank....adds the petrol at about the half way mark and goes on from there. The most common oil we find here is Sunflower and is sold commercially for around 15 pence per litre. There is no limit on how much you can use for any reason.
Just in case you are wondering what motor he is abusing....It's a VM 2.5,with just a tad over 300,000 miles on the clock which I checked out today. Sad thing was,the body hadn't kept up with the motor!

XJ'S Are the ones. Your pipework will fit the 8mm so just trim the 6mm off and follow the directional arrow on the filter to fit

being doing it for 8 years now,no major probs,i mix it with diesel or some petrol in the winter,ie for a full tank 50/25 0r 50/50 of ver and derv or full tank of veg oil and around a gallon of petrol on top,this keeps th veg oil from thickening up in very cold weather,,,good heater plugs ar a must so change them out as veg oil has a higher flash point than derv.
change you fuel filter after a week of first using veg,it pulls all the crap out of you fuel lines,other than that you will hav no bother,she will run smother,there will be no lack in power,and once she has warmed up she will purr like a kitten,i take it this is an xj you have,,,oh and emissions test is a breeze,my garage does not even bother now testing my xj emissions there so low on the pure veg.
best places to buy the oil is costco in 20 ltrs drums,if you have source for used oil you need to de water it,and filter it,info on the net for this,Indian take aways are best places for oil as they change there oil every other day
