Title: Headlight Adjustment on an XJ
Post by: XJ Fan on September 12, 2014, 10:48:41 AM
Morning, apart from the adjuster switch inside the cab, is there any other way to adjust the beam angle of the headlights on an XJ?

There should be a couple of screws at opposite corners of the lights for alignment. The adjuster screw on mine has never worked since I got it, don't know if it's the switch or some other issue.

You mean on the light housing on the "face" of the Jeep, or inside the engine bay/slam panel area somewhere? (sorry, it's been a while since I took it apart to look myself)

On the outside, think they should be behind the plastic surround. That's the usual place for alignment screws. :)

You will need a long smallish phillips or cross head screw driver.

Facing car look for some subtle cut outs at the 11 and 4 oclock position

You can see two cut outs at 11 & 1 on this, there looks to be another at about 4 as well.

Right then, I removed the plastic surround, just so I could see what to play with, and found this:

I assumed the two star-nut things (I din't know their real name) were the adjusters, and I adjusted away. All good, until the nearside rounded off, and it doesn't have a shape enabling the use of another tool. So it's kinda stuck where it is. It's not level with the far-side (as far as I can tell in the daytime), so will go out for another play at night to see what it's like.

Trouble is it needed to be changed for MOT, so hopefully it will pass.

They are the adjusters, sounds like some wd40 and fiddling is required
