Title: rear axle

I need a new rear axle for my 98 XJ, I've seen one for sale on ebay but don't know if it's a dana 35 diff or not.
Will other diff's fit or does it have to be a D35

Unless it's a 2.5 petrol, it's a 35. You must get one from an XJ with the same engine/transmission combo to get the correct gear ratio.

But why do you need a whole new/different axle?what has happened to the original?

at times its quicker to swap an axle than the dial in a new set of gears
