On with sorting out some initial problems with my new Jeep. Its a 98 model XJ and I'm going to add a lift and poss some 33s to it after its repaired.
What I would like to know are best ways to get some more performance out of the engine. Has anyone squeezed extra power from these 4.0 units and what works best?
Or has anyone done an engine transplant or supercharger :-)
If anyone has any bits lying around let me know too thanks Nicola
-
Not sure if serious :ace:
-
Oh I'm always serious ;-) .. Cars in now for new radiator. Alternator and UJ .. Spoke to Dave at Llama about lift kit on Tuesday and tyres direct about wheels same day lol
-
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/xj_swap.htm
But seen a couple of cheaper supercharger kits for about £2500. Typical 'boy racer' mods don't seem to do much ?? Is that true?
Seems to be about 250bhp with supercharger kit
-
If you are going to use it Offroad then what You have got under the hood is great.......gearing and lockers will be what you need to address to increase Offroad ability......
If you want to go fast on road......save your coin and sell it for something with a V8 £2,500 will by you a lot of hooligan V8 jeep stuff. Early LHD 5.2 or maybe 5.9 grand cherokee..... Mid 90's.
There is a Birty member with a Supercharger on this club forum.........tis on a TJ with lots of nice bits.......he'll tell you it's the worst spend he's done........a waste of time......
-
Indeed, don't bother with a supercharger - I spent £7k on one !!
-
If you are serious about wanting more power look at Novak adapters for a v8 conversion. Little bolt on bits don't do much apart from make the exhaust sound a bit better and empty money from the bank account.
Superchargers just use fuel quicker for little gain from what I've heard.
-
Stop now before you have started and think exactly what you want.
more power speed etc = go and buy something else
the 4ltr is more than capable in regards to power, Willow will confirm this with his racing.
no point having power if you cant get traction off road.
the 4ltr engine performs well enough as it is, bolt on goodies that claim 10 to 15hp gain maybe right but will you actually notice the change apart from a graph on a piece of paper, i think not
look at pirate 4x4 for what they do to their jeeps and actually what changes do entail (body modification and expense is the normal answer)
-
If you want 33s you'll be spending a couple of grand on a regear next.
-
Stroke it :icon_winkle:
However regearing it will get performance back for less ££
-
If you can wait a bit you can buy my 4.0 with all the upgrades you can fit on it bar stroking it :greggmo:
-
I've just bought a cherokee with a k&n cold ram air thingy on it pulls like a train
Even with 32's on it looked it up should get you 8-9 bhp feels to me like it might have engine runs dead clean and emissions at mot today where really low .003 co
It might feel pokey as I had a zj before 1/2 tonne heavier :hysterical:
-
If you want 33s you'll be spending a couple of grand on a regear next.
or buy a scrapped 2.5ltr and swap the axles
-
Glen from 4playJeep has a TJ with Nitrous fitted, says it goes some.
-
best £ spent on a 4litre is a decent set of headers & free flow exhaust
-
Thanks for thr replies. I already drive things which go fast ;-) (see photo) ... BUT I want to go fast in an XJ Jeep lol AND use it off road. I'm a woman .. I'm very demanding lol!!!
Thanks for the advice need to do more research on supercharger but almost all of you say no. That doesn't appear great news .. Add ons seem poor so that kind of leaves engine swaps :-/ .. Time to get reading more thanks :098:
-
Holy crap, if that's your Bentley I would say that you can probably put a few quid into making your XJ a fricking awesome machine :ace:
-
4.7 stroker, 280-300 bhp, and alot less faff than something like a lexus v8 swap. About 1700quid plus shipping from the US
Possibly next buy for my grand
-
but a stroker will never be a V8
-
280-300 bhp would be awesome to be honest. Just old skool fun like an ML55 but in a proper car like a Jeep :-) the price is great value too so that's something I now need to google. Or maybe tomorrow. Been a long day and wine is calling haha
-
but its alot of work to fit a v8 into an xj
-
For more torque V8 is the ONLY answer..
-
For more torque V8 is the ONLY answer..
Or buy a Scania :003:

For more torque V8 is the ONLY answer..
:You_Rock_Emoticon: :F2963JIF5GDQOXEMEDIUM:
Go V8, or go home
-
Buy an SRT8
-
:003: I already have :headbanger:
-
Those figures are optimistic for a stroker
-
That's why I was originally thinking supercharger or stroker but lots of people seem to think the supercharger is a bad idea. The kit seems really good value but I'm guessing it's problematic??
-
The V8 sounds a great conversion but I don't know enough about it and don't want to spend ages with the Jeep in the garage. I want to be able to use it not spend months waiting for it to be done. I really do like the V8 idea but if the supercharger was viable then I would probably go that for. Does anyone know anyone with one fired or are there any members here with a stroker or V8 conversion who can share their experience?
-
There are both on here.....
Supercharger on TJ a
YJ with Stroker kit......
The supercharger owner has already voiced his advice........ :icon_twisted:
The Stroker kit was done in the USA and the owner is spanner capable so was economic........
Seems to work for him but I'm sure he'll be along with some figs for you.
-
Mark Gasser had a blower on his MJ, it was a bit if a waste in his own words
-
....it was also stroked. Seemed to spend a lot of it's time (ahem) under development.
-
if you want a v8 in a jeep sell the xj and buy a grand cherokee with one fitted. or buy a cj or wrangler with one fitted.
conversion of a cherokee will see it in the garage a long time with much moolar being spent over a long time

Awesome vids.... Jeeps rule... :icon_super:
Had to laugh at the CJ7 and the Ferrari both stopped at the petrol station after the race :icon_biggrin:
-
Lol a fair few keep saying .. "Sell the xj and buy a" .. No offence boys but if I wanted a different car I'd have bought one in the first place lol ;-)
All I really want is an xj project that's capable off road and faster on the street. I was thinking 260 bhp ish but it seems that there are problems doing this. Supercharger is ruled out as no one speaks highly of this.
I LOVE the XJ. Always have. We have had a few over the years either a promo cars or a bit of fun. I could go out and buy a new Cayenne Turbo if I wanted to go fast but I want to make a few changes to the Jeep and feel a bit more Lara croft haha
I'll try and find a bit more about putting a v8 in the XJ plus chat to the guys who have done the stroker and see from there.
I'm still torn on the lift kit to be honest. Have to start making some decisions though :strum:
-
I built a stroker years ago while living on a little island in the middle of nowhere. I had the ability and access to everything at work including boring machines for the cylinders.
They can be done even easier now since you can buy off the shelf stroker pistons. Go for the high compression ones in the UK since the fuel is better.
300hp is out of the question unless you spend the bank. look at a simple version around 240 to 250hp and it will run a lifetime and not cost you a fortune.
To start with you need the basic components and plan on a full overhaul. Then it just bolts back in place and nobody knows even the MOT man. Mine is running a pretty good cam and since I still have a cat it passed the emissions without issue.
Look this site over for quite a bit of information. He put it together along time back but the basic information doesn't change.

If you must......
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhigh-performance-engines.com%2FMerchant2%2Fgraphics%2F00000001%2FHP86%2C%2520HP87%2C%2520HP88%2520web.jpg&hash=77e8f4c827d914ea69e2745d30746a0f2aa2a375)

But you'll need to add uprated fuel and exhaust systems, brakes, rear axle etc to make it work.
-
Got me looking at the bay didn't you :jpshakehead:
Loads of GC 4.7 V8s for not a lot.....
And an SRT8 .........just for you Ade :hysterical:
-
Now that's more like it. Sensible work not ridiculous money and good HP from it :-)
Off for a little read now! :97:
-
Were not saying don't do it but you said you don't want a car in a garage for longer than required and not a money pit. Unless your good mechanically yourself in all aspects, then your pocket will take an even bigger hammering. Have a look at the links below to give an idea of what work is or maybe required.
Then think again before you say yes or no, something like this you will never return the expenditure

Enquiries have already been made :icon_winkle:
Project CJ7 :icon_super:

I have to say
"There ain't no substitute for cubic inches"
-
Thanks for all the replies and help BTW! Some great ideas there. Going to start ordering wheels and suspension this week I think but already thinking about brake and exhaust upgrades ahead of any engine work.
Must admit I don't want it off the road for ages but ultimately its just a toy so I can do without it if necessary. The V8s are awesome and would be a great conversion but I do think a stroker looks a really good compromise.
Either way I hope this has stimulated a bit of thought and conversation about options lol
-
If you are going for the stroker DONT go bigger than 4.7 litres... People have over bored to get 4.8 litres but you end up with paper thin cylinder walls.....not good for the longevity of the engine.
-
To be honest -What a waste of alleged cash...your axles alone are only fit for approx half the power you currently have :lol_hitting:
-
:iagree: True
-
To be honest -What a waste of alleged cash...your axles alone are only fit for approx half the power you currently have :lol_hitting:
That reminds me :017: i must get one piece shafts this year :003:
-
I enjoyed the the little dig there "use of alleged cash" .. Always nice to be on the receiving end of the word 'alleged' lol
That aside it seems the 30 is perfectly capable of handling the stroker. Unless wheel sizes go crazy. Even with lockers it seems OK. Plus it can have the shafts upgraded if needed. The xj has the same ujoint as the 44 from what I've read too? If not then it can have larger ujoints added regardless.
I will do some off roading but nothing really extreme so don't imagine myself straining the axles in the same way some of you do.
Of course I'd love to hear your 'non dig' thoughts axle wise! :wave-fingersmiely:
-
If you're not going mental with tyres....... IE keeping them at 33" and 10.50 wide or metric equivalent.......
Then you're best bet is axles from a vehicle that will give you the correct ratios for those tyres...... IE 4.10
So.......go buy an MOT failure Petrol XJ that had the 2.5 4 cylinder emphasis again petrol engine.
The axles off this are Chrysler 8.8 at the rear which will take a locker and not grenade, has the 4.10 ratio and you're done. The front is the same as yours but with 4.10 ratio......
Job done....
You might find a 4 cylinder petrol XJ for £500.
Lots of other alternatives but expensive or it means using Nissan Patrol axles and ££££££ not for the axles but for the knowledge and engineering involved.
-
I did read about the Nissan option but there were also some Ford options there.
A couple of my clients run tuning companies plus we have some corporate clients who manufacture car parts so have a few 'go to' people if necessary. Half the fun is learning along the way though!
I'm not going to spend silly money on this and am still at the bottom of the learning curve really. I suppose it depends what you call expensive and that's the bit in so figuring out. The cost of doing different things to the Jeep. Getting there slowly but surely though.
I have seen a fair few people with the 2.5 axle on various forums. I thought the issue with the stroker though was strength rather than just gearing?
-
What's your intended budget for this project?
-
a birty budget is blood sweat and tears with jaffa cakes. followed by a reluctant call to a US supplier
-
I don't have a firm budget. But ideally wouldn't want to go above £9,000 to 10k over the next 12 months on the Jeep. There's other car projects we are wanting to do.
I think thats a realistic amount for the engine and suspension mods I'd like to do. Plus should leave a little for brakes etc
I fully understand we will never get that back buy I'm not fussed about that. Its highly unlikely we would ever sell it anyway. The only thing niggling me is that I've bought a facelift car and really prefer the pre facelift but its solid and don't need much work wise to get it right to start with.
-

If you are really fussed, then you should be able to swap most, if not all, of the parts over to make a prefacelift make over.
-
That's interesting and hadnt thought of that. A lot of trouble though for probably not much pay off. Really like the retro feel of the old xj interior and dash which is probably my main thing. But the one we've bought is black with tan leather and I have to admit that colour combination looks cool too. If it had black leather would be very tempted to go NATO green on the outside again though!
-
SOME SAY........One has to build first before one tears it down !!
I have built many and thrive on it.
-
Though I'm on my 3rd facelift I really miss my first xj an L reg pre airbag mk 1
Real classic american feel to the interior most are rotten out by now, love to find a low mileage mk1 minter
