I've just changed the stereo in the XJ
I bought a Sony CDX GT200 MP3 cd head unit (upto 13hours music on one disk) £80 delivered, Fascia and wiring adapter for £15 delivered, both off ebay, and I bought 2 sets of Alpine SXE 1350S's(£25 a pair).
These have a pair of 13cm speakers with some small satellite tweeters. I replaced the rears as these are a piece of piss. The Alpines are not very bassy so I left the original front door speakers in.
WHAT A FLIPPIN DIFFERENCE!!
The Alpines have totally lifted the whole sound and the tweeters sit up by rear seatbelt mounts.
Works like a charm. All for under £120.

The stereo in my XJ died after getting full of water.. Has anybody here replaced their head unit with an aftermarket item linked directly to the speakers? My head unit is currently attached to an infinity amp under the back seat. I think it's only the amplifier that's knackered (it went underwater!) But the head unit doesn't respond to any button pushes.. any ideas? I'll have a look on evil bay and see what's out there.

Does the stereo come on at all? Could just be a fuse.

i put a panasonc cd player in mine nothing special but even using the std speakers the quality was a great improvement

Infinity = mk2 which means you'll need a fascia adapter, cheap on the bay.
You'll need an amp bypass wiring harness to use the headunit only. Look on ebay.com
You'll also need a chrysler to ISO harness for the head unit. Then buy whichever headunit you fancy.
