Now that im starting to get something that is looking jeep'ish id thought id Start a build thread for my flat fender jeep.
Have always loved the look of the old jeeps, and when my trusty old Suzuki rusted itself to bits decided it was time to build something.
Plan is to build a fairly capable off-roader using the strongest and best bits that i can afford/ lay my hands on. Love the American Flat fender builds and have nicked plenty of ideas from plenty of their builds.
Haven't got a time frame in mind really, but would be nice to be using it this time next year.
Spec should be something along these lines......................
Reproduction Mb Body, Original 1943 grill and wings
Home made 2x4 Box section Chassis
Nissan patrol Y61 axles
12'' Gaz Coilovers
Radius arm suspension
Toyota 1KZT 3.0 TD engine and Gearbox
Old Warn 8200 Winch
35'' Maxxis Creepy crawlers
Sure things will change as i go along and realize things wont work/fit
Used an old M38 body for mock up and initial measurements
Started with a few lengths of 4x2 Box section, chopped it up to make some chassis rails

Mounting the front axle created a new problem as the steering now hit my winch mount! Didn't really want to change to a lowline winch, love the look of the old warn winches.
so only option was to remake the front cross-member/bumper
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy33%2Fsamprankerd%2FIMG_0143_zpsh8ljyfcb.jpg&hash=8b7bf536f89b04e982d6644b664a88b569183988) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/samprankerd/media/IMG_0143_zpsh8ljyfcb.jpg.html)

And yesterdays Job was cutting the brand new body tub in half to gain some much needed leg room/gearbox/prop room,
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy33%2Fsamprankerd%2FIMG_0161_zpsffjzycgq.jpg&hash=249acca75fbcb4b3f077c4bda8a88374f3aae5d1) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/samprankerd/media/IMG_0161_zpsffjzycgq.jpg.html)

Cool, like this a lot
-
:icon_super:
Amazing attention to detail.
-
:greggmo: :icon_super: :jump_125:
-
HUBBA HUBBA !!
-
That's looking pretty good you must have gonads the size of water Mellons to cut a brand new body in half. I would love a flat Fender.
Uncas
-
Awesome, love it, welding porn too!!
-
Thanks for all the kind comments Chaps.
As for cutting the body, i was a little nervous, needed a good few cups of tea to build up the courage. Going to make it much more useable though, and yet another thing to upset the rivet counters
-
such a brave project and looking good, gather it wont be road legal :icon_biggrin:
-
Love this :icon_super:
-
I have been wanting to do this to the 1 Tonne for a couple of years...... Stretched with the front wheels way up front :icon_super:
I had to check to see if this was a UK build...... For a moment I thought I had logged into Pirate Hardcore again......respect.....good work.... :icon_twisted:
-
now if you want to piss off rivet counters.....
half 2cv and MB ( and yes it was a gen tub) :die:
-
Nice work.
Dyane engine or later 1200
Had a 68 LHD 2cv once ...... :hysterical: with the smaller engine.....425cc
Took it all the way to South of France and back...... :icon_super:
Took time on the back roads....lol trucks were faster than us.....
-

all 2CV running gear & chassis with Dyane/MB hybrid body
was made from photos of original 60's creation, he has also made a helo-drop 50 cal carrier which I do prefer
But thats enough french crap, the OP is doing great work and should be proud
-
Haha love the MB-2CV! bet you had some fun in that thing. And Pirate 4x4 has a lot to answer for, id advise people to avoid at all costs!
-
Love this build... In fact this thread should carry a warning... I got so excited I did a little Man wee
Lol... Keep the updates coming
-
this is a very sexy build thread
-
wouldn't call it sexy, dont think it would look good in a skirt
-
Not as much progress as i would have liked, got the body tub welded back together, haven't bothered welding all the floor back in as i'm sure its going to need to get chopped out for gearbox clearance.

Built some mounts for the front grill, added another cross-member behind the grill, bent up some shock hoops and got the front coil-overs in,
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy33%2Fsamprankerd%2FIMG_0253_zpsrkjrh0n9.jpg&hash=391cb8cad2fc1dcafbf27f2078d1513254001a63) (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/samprankerd/media/IMG_0253_zpsrkjrh0n9.jpg.html)

Plan is to brace the top of the shock hoops together with a removable brace bar.
Should all just about clear the bonnet, although have a feeling i'm not going to have much inner wing left.
Next job is to tack all the other side in, then onto the rear end, then the engine
-
looking good
-
Wow, I'm definitely a fan (and definitely a saddo who gets over excited at this kind of stuff!)
-
You and me both James :ace:
Just think if you make your own çhassis and create space for all the bits you have squirrelled away.......
Then in my fantasy world.....bingo there's room for a lazy 496 making a fun 550 horses and torque thingies.......
Oh yes...... :icon_super:
-
I think wildwoods going to rub one off !!!!
-
Already done....... :hysterical: twice
-
:hysterical:
-
Very nice for sure,Not a radius arm fan but super job :greggmo:
-
Thanks for all the comments, radius arms aren't the best solution but, they are cheap, and easy to mount.
I reckon the head work involved in building a decent 3 or 4 link would melt my brain. I'm not shooting for lots of flex, my previous truck had lots of flex and it got me in some sticky situations.
The front suspension is finally done, and is sitting at ride height.

Plan is to get the front wings chopped out and move onto the rear end next weekend. also ordered some seats and harness's
-
Seats turned up today, quality seems nice and they're super comfy, plan on spending the whole evening sitting in one.

-
Nice seats.....did you import them?
I am running plastic Whitbread seats with cushions.....still rubs the base of the spine after a weekend of Offroad
-
Looked at importing seats but shipping was ridiculous, Also looked at the whitbreads, very practical but , wanted something with a bit more padding. These are from VW Heritage 'Empi race trims', arrived the next day , and got to say very happy with them.

-
looking good
-
Like the out of the box thinking with the escort tank.......
Got to do a tank for the 1 Tonne as the small one in it at the moment takes 12 litres .......
Requiring a return to base for a refill a few times over the weekend.
-
Well havent touched the poor thing since December, been a rather busy year working moving house, etc, etc
Enough making excuses time to get cracking again,
Have decided on a few changes, diesel hilux engine is out the window, too boring. Couldnt stretch to a V8 but, have a fuel injected 4.3 chevy Vortec V6 to go in, and a Jeep CJ 3 speed manual.
Also managed to find another old Warn 8200 which i plan to clean up and put on the rear.
Plan is to order the engine/box adapter, find a manual bellhousing , drop it all in and get it a running and moving under its own power by the end of the summer.
Will post some pictures if any of this actually happens
-
which cj box may have an adapter and bell housing
-
Ohhh really??? Could be very interested t150 gearbox. Cheers
-
bell housing
