I've got an XJ in at the moment, fault code P1698 transmission control module not communicating with PCM
I've replaced the TCM but still not difference,
In auto it only has 4th gear, manual selector of 2nd and 3rd work perfectly.
Any ideas

What shift solenoids are in an XJ 4.0

Check the fuses under the bonnet.

I can't remember the exact number, but that's a very similar fault description to the one my XJ had when the massive square connector with a bolt through it, located to the right above the driver's footwell, was loose. I couldn't get the Jeep started at the time though, so can't tell you if it would have had the same problems.

I'll take a look.
If it was a shift solenoid would it still pay up through manual changes?
As manual changes are perfect

Andy had a problem with one that he had. Manual shifts fine, doesn't work in auto. It was a solonoid.

Do you know which one as I think there are 3

If you search for the manual shifter mod on NAXJA and other forums you should come across complete breakdowns and photos of it all. The manual shifter acts as a switch between solenoids I think.

Thanks all, found lots of info just got to find someone in UK that sells the solenoids now!
