Title: TJ and XJ questions
Post by: Paulie on October 16, 2015, 01:40:18 PM
Hi all, firstly the TJ. Due to a cheap and nasty locking wheel nut I now have to drill out a wheel stud from the hub. Can anyone tell me if the studs are replaceable or will a replacement hub be required? And for the XJ, the power steering is inoperative for right turns and can be coaxed with some revs for lefties. I'm assuming it's the pump or steering box but if someone can point a finger at the one most likely to be the duffer of the pair I would be very grateful. :017:

Is the locking nut still on the jeep or did you get it off and damaged the threads?

Never changed one but I would expect they would be the standard pressed in type.

As for getting a lock nut off I have usually managed this by finding a 12 point socket just smaller then the nut. This can usually be smashed on by the use of a very large hammer so you can use normal tools.

I may be able to help on the power steering. I had an Merc SL that developed exactly that fault. Easy movement of 1 lock but no assistance on the opposite lock. It was cured with a refurb'd steering box.

Studs are replaceable!
Changed most of mine; quite dear to buy from Jeep.
Jeep locknuts are cheese; mine were removed by welding on sockets for the Above incident.

Wot he said about studs. Just knock whats left through with a hammer. The replacement will pull in when you put the wheel back on.

Excellent news regarding the wheel nuts, not so good for the steering issue. I'm assuming the steering system is self bleeding? Apparently she did let the level get low before topping it back up.

steering should turn ok with no fluid but the wear on the box will be increased.

A gues is the box is worn bad, have you tried jacking the front off the ground and turning from lock to lock, if the box is worn you should feel the nochiness or roughness

I had the same (apart from revs helping) when I sheared all the steering box bolts and had to be towed back while at KORC  :hysterical:

re locking wheel nut i dont know if i am lucky or very ruthless but i have never failed or damaged any wheels using the method of thrashing a socket slightly to small to go over the locking nut  and i am old enough to say i have done it many times
