Trying to remove center bold on balancer wheel but when i turn it it turns the engine. Do i need to wedge it in place and is it threaded the opposite way. Im replacing the timing chain.
Thanks

put in gear if manual, drive line should lock the engine
or lock the gear by spiking the timing chain to the sprocket, just hope you dont break the chain before the bolt torque releases

If you cant lock the engine it would be safer to strap the damper if you can.
If the bolt is really stuck you can fill a cylinder with small rope. You need to ensure the piston is down and the valves are closed. To be really safe you can pull the rocker arms. Remove the plug and fill the cylinder with thin rope (don't loose the end). The piston then cant go past TDC allowing you to undo the bolt.
Its a bit slow but works. I had to do it several times taking flywheels off diesels since there is nothing to hold them. Only you have to stuff rope down the injector hole.

Not jeep, but I've got a crank bolt off before by using a strongarm braced against the wing and having somebody crank the engine. Starter does the job of loosening the bolt for you. Removing the fuel pump relay is probably a good idea too.

Cheers. This one is a manual I'm rebuilding so I'll put her in gear and use impact wrench.
I also need to remove one on an automatic. I might just try the impact wrench alone. Maybe the engine vacuum will be enough to hold her. I read about the rope trick so might do that if it fails.
Thanks

impact wrench should shift it with ease

On my 4.2 auto I put a wooden wedge between the ring gear and the bell housing, it does the job every time. I only ever do the job with a breaker bar but admit I prefer to use an impact socket.
Oh, bolt is RH thread and about 45 mm long but its a high tensile, imperial fine thread.
When you reinstall put the bolt in the hole and turn anticlockwise to pick up the thread start first cos you wont half curse if you strip the crank.
