Title: Front end knocking
Post by: Sooty Si on January 04, 2016, 07:58:22 PM
Alright, so, further to my post about wheel bearings, I've replaced the front nearside CV joint - what I thought was the source of the knocking sound from that area when turning and driving (only noticeable at very low speed for example when reversing and turning out of my driveway). Didn't make any difference. Someone has suggested front nearside droplink, but my experience of worn drop links is more of a lighter tapping noise when driving. What else could it be? Any suggestions?

Front prop, take it off & see if it still does it. Suppose it could also be the gearbox/transfer case mount, but I would expect 1 clunk rather than multiple

Yeah, it's more of a regular, light, knocking sound relative to wheel speed, rather than just an odd knock every now and then. Which is why I went straight to cv joint based on past experience with cars (not 4x4's).

Agree with Panic, I had a knock similar to what your describing and it was worn shock mounts.

Turned out to be a good excuse for a 3inch lift all round!

Haha, no worries. When I get back home (away on a ourse at the mo) on Friday, I'll double check the nuts and shock mounts and drop links just to be sure.
