I was going to rob another thread as this was discussed there but said i better start me own one.
Never knew about Emergency drive and I'm wondering if thats affecting a 79 Quadratrac Cj7 I have.
Bought it about 5 years ago and it was a lemon but Im keeping it. There is feck all power in it and the front drive shaft was removed so its a 2 wheel drive.
If I try and drive up on a kerb it will almost cut out and have very little power. It have very little speed on the motorway but I put this down to 31 inch tyres but maybe its this emergency thingy or even bad vacume lines in the quadratrac knob in the glove box.
A mechanic looked at it a few years ago and said there was a rattle noise coming from my front diff so maybe thats why it was disconnected. Then I read somewhere else that quadratrac splits the power 60/40 front/back. So does that mean Im only getting 40 of the power of the engine into the wheels without the front drive shaft connected.
Any suggestions on where to start. Maybe reattach the front drive shaft and order ring and pinon for front diff and take it from there. How do I know if emergency is on or off as its not clear from the knob which is which.

There should be a light in the speedo when it's in emergency drive.
If you've got no front driveshaft you need to be in emergency drive or you'll burn up the clutches in the transfer case, I'm surprised it moves at all, the quadratrac is just a limited slip that can be locked, no idea about how it could be a 60/40 torque split given what's in there
It's a very simple vacuum operated system which can normally be solved by checking / replacing the vacuum soft lines.
I'd start by putting the driveshaft back on as it was never really designed to be two wheel drive, and see what happens

No problem, the quadratrac is a simple beast that can be rebuilt by anybody with normal tools.
The only things you can't buy are the clutches, hopefully yours are ok.
Decent chains are now available again too

Don't believe the nonsense that quadartracs are crap from people that don't understand them / or look after them, they are very simple strong units that were way ahead of their time. if the chain fails they do explode in a spectacular fashion though, I'm still picking bits of aluminium out of my transfer case pan. :011:

i have had quite a few qtraks over the years and confirm whats been said i have used them in emergency drive sometimes for extended periods the lsd is a rather strange cone clutch affair
i personally like the mile marker conversion that eliminates it and makes for normal 4x4 4x2 use
qtrak was developed to handle 500hp and was advertised as torque splitting 60 40 cant remember the specifics of the blurb
in good condition its a superb transfer case
it does have a poor rep due to the fact that should the chain break it bunches under the lower sprocket in the case causing the inside to suddenly be on the outside destroying the case
this is normally avoidable by checking the chain periodically and taking heed of the loud ratcheting/grating noise they make under sudden acceleration before the chain breaks
so good is it that jeep used them in there own factory desert race jeeps the last being 401 powered cj8s
the feeble performance you report would to me seem to be something else very poor engine performance slipping torque converter or transmission not changing correctly or not at all

i think that might be the overdrive sprockets and chain rather than the 4x2 kit myself

you ought to apply for a testers job at clayton off road, if he cant break it and you cant break it then its good for sale with life time guarantee
