Ok so i found a lovely easter egg left by PO - a snapped exhaust manifold bolt in the head...
Has anyone successfully managed to put in a timesert or heli coil into cast iron head of one of these cj engines in situ? - I've been quoted £80 by specialist mobile thread guy...might be money well spent if its a nightmare or is it relatively simple process? (i currently have the front wings and manifolds off so access is good) thx

I'd go with the £80 guy.....
Easi outs are not, as their name suggests and are worse if they snap cos they are harder than a hard thing.....
Other ways are spark erosion but need kit for that..... And as it's easy access for the man I would stand back and let him sweat on this occasion.

:iagree:.....sometimes it's prudent to stand and watch. :greggmo:

helicoils are ok but not robust, damage the coil and forget putting a bolt in.
timsert = strong threaded bolt hole, thread stripped just remove tim sert and insert another, best fix for a spark plug
£80 to fix pay the money and leave the hassle to someone else

You do have the manifolds off already I assume? Either way dont be surprised if that has to happen.
With manifolds out of the way you might be able to weld a suitable scrap bolt to the sheared off stud and work it out with penetrating oil and care.
If you go for a Helicoil/Recoil, make sure you are not going to get galvanic corrosion by only using a coated and passivated insert. Tubular inserts are usually superior but size and location would determine possibility of use.

ok called specialist and watched him do exactly what i would have done - still at least its done and i would of had to buy the tools anyway. (i think the secret is a really good quality tap and ratchet drill tbh).
The rebuild can continue now! cheers all.

good result, but if he broke the tap then it would have been fun to watch him remove it
-
tbh id done 90% of the hard work drilling most of it out, and his tap seemed to cut into the head like butter - very sharp, looked good quality, expensive.
I think most of the technique is not to be scared and get it right first time by just getting into it positively.

I would defo go with the £80.let him have the stress.not only that it will then be warranted.
