Hi all,
I'm having a bit of a dilemma, I can't decide what engine to fit in my CJ6 project.
I fitting a T18 manual box, and I don't know whether to go with a 360 V8, or to fit a more modern 4.0 I6 out of a XJ Cherokee.
I hope you guys can help with my decision
I loved the 4.0 in my old XJ, but I still like the V8 rumble.
I've already got a 360 out of a car, with a 4 barrel and tube headers.
What are your opinions on these 2 engines?
What are the pros and cons of each?
Cheers Frank.

V8 will give you more smiles per mile.... :icon_super:
-
T18 loves a V8 and with that low first......rock crawling will be a breeze......
-
What are you doing with the Jeep?
The V8 is far more fun but the 4.0 comes with fuel injection for everyday driving.
-
:iagree:
If you are going to travel all over the country then the YJ engine and all the fuel injection advantages will get you 15 -18 on 31 s or 33s
V8 might be down in single digits with 35s and a heavy right foot......
Also unless you are a carb guru or have an Edelbrock then off camber and hill climbs and descents will cause fuel starvation or flooding.......or stick with the Motorcraft AMC carb
The XJ/ YJ engine will run on its side.......(how did I find that out?)
-
If you already have a v8 then i'd say go for it, unless its going to be a daily driver then might cost too much to run. Or put a fuel injection system like this http://www.affordable-fuel-injection.com/product/jeep-amc-tbi-complete-system/ onto your v8

chevvy LM7 5.3 V8 that I have for sale :97:

It depends what you want to use it for. I'd suggest that the 4.0 with a Cherokee autobox but that does seem a bit sensible and wimpy compared to a big V8 with manual box.

Willo's V8

I have the 360 in my 6, lots of fun
-
V8 all the way, can't beat the rumble, will run at almost any angle with the motorcraft carb, as Jez said
-
4BT.
-
I did think of dropping a Cummins in, but a 4bt is hard to find, and the 6bt that I've got in the yard is a bit big and heavy, even compared to the 360...
-
Cummins are great but as you said......weight..... :jpshakehead:
Narrow power band for off road abuse
