Title: 2000 Grand Cherokee Overheating

Hi folks, am new here and looking for help with my 2000 Grand Cherokee Ltd. It's been a fabulous truck except for an overheating issue our mechanic can't seem to work out. It's fine on the highway but in slow traffic the temperature goes up quickly, especially with warm weather. It got a little bit better since our mechanic connected the front fan with the ignition but still not good enough. I'd love to take it to the continent in July but in this state I'm concerned.
Any advice would be helpful. Oh and I'm in the Chelmsford area - does someone know a mechanic in the area who's familiar with such Jeep issues?

Blocked/poor flowing radiator?

Sticking themostat, water pump poor?

Any water loss?

There is a relay for the fan tucked away in the inner offside wing. I think mine was fubared from when I bought the Grand. Temp sat at normal for two years until I got caught in a mega traffic jam on a very hot day. Boiled up. Thought it was the fan initially but after the relay was changed the gauge now sits well below vertical.

Thanks everybody, very helpful! I'll report back when I know more. I found an indie nearby who's at least willing to look at it, will pass on your pointers. fingers crossed!

i know the v8s overheat in traffic, if the aircon is on  :jpshakehead:

Bingo! Mike was spot on! It was the viscous coupling of the fan. My new mechanic even knew the issue when I transmitted the message and knew what to look for and how to test it.

Ordered spare part from Jeep, 1 hour's worth of labour. Best 300 quid ever spent. Even after criss-crossing town for several errants the temperature barely reached 80. The fan is back to doing its job.

I'm one very very happy lady  :ace:

The viscous coupling is often overlooked as the fan is still spinning, and there is also an auxiliary electric fan fitted for the AC, which people mistakenly think is man enough to keep things cool on it's own.
