Hi guys, can anyone help me identify exactly what rear axle and gear ratio I currently have on my 96 4.0 ZJ?
I've read pretty much every forum post on every forum I can find, and to be honest I think I've read so many different things I'm just confusing myself even further.
I think it's a D35c, and judging by the other codes, it's a 4.198 gear ratio (seems very high, I'd assumed it'd be a 3.73 or 3.55?). Also 2 other codes, which I'm clueless about.

It's a 35. The ratio is on a tag that has usually go missing on Thu age of jeep the only way to tell the ratio is to count the teeth of the ring and pinion.
-
Thanks, yeah could see vague evidence of where the tag had once been but the tag itself is long gone.
Cheers for confirming!

If it's unmodified you could contact Jeep from the US website and ask for a build sheet which they will email to you. It will tell you what was fitted at the factory. You'll need a US address for the enquiry but you can use any address you want.

:iagree: I've done this with all three Jeeps in the family now and they've emailed me the build sheet in a couple of days.
Our '97 4.0 ZJ has a Dana 35C rear axle with the Trac-Lok LSD and a 3.73 ratio. I would assume that all UK ZJs are the same, but Dave (bigjeepzj) will probably correct me on that!
I believe that this is the form you need to fill out:
http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep/EmailPage.html
I always selected the "Customer Assistance" box which worked every time. I also just filled out my address as best I could then put a US ZIP code.

It should be a D35c with Trac-Loc. 3.73 diesel or 3.55 petrol if I recall.

Would the back axle from a 4.0 99-04 WJ be a match do any of you know?

No wj is different. D44 with alloy center.

much easier way to try first is this,
http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep/index.html?screenName=customer&country=us&emailUrl=goToEmailForm%2528%2527R%2527%2529
on the left in the "Your Vehicle" box, click equipment listing and type in your VIN number, If your lucky it will open a new tab with your build sheet, if not you will have to do it like Brynjaminjones said.
-
Cheers guys, I'll try the VIN number link in the morning and see how it goes, if not I'll try the email approach.

Just tried the on-line lookup bit, and it says it only goes back to 1998.
So I have sent them an email...
