Did my first bit of offroading yesterday. About an hour and a half of serious mud. All great fun until the road journey home when I endured a stench of what smelt like burning wood. I thought it would be allsorts of crap stuck on the exhaust etc so gave it no thought.
Went and washed the car underneath totally and guess what Its still there. Its worse when I put the foot down and I`m flapping I have serious problems. :?:
-
Have you inspected the exhaust system from top to bottom? It may be that you have a stick or something lodged on top and out of sight.
-
Have you got a tranny case skid plate....all sorts of stuff can get lodged in one :?
-
Been under a couple of times and seen nothing. Smell seems to be coming from below the engine area.I`m going to take it another run on the tar and get back underneath with a torch. A bit wary of giving it some stick (not a joke
).
Fingers crossed
-
There was allsorts of gunk stuck in the hard to see bits. Cleaned it off looked like tree bark :smt023
-
Baked mud can smell horrible. Have a look and see if the shield on the cat is full of it.
-
The Cat is in a bag in the garage (save the environment and that). Theres a full stainless on it. I think its just baked on shite thats burning off. Transfer case skid plate? Sounds like a sensiblr idea to `Joe new guy` here. Where do I get a hold of such a thing?
-
Well things like the radiator, tranny case and fueltank don't tend to win arguments with rocks and anything else firmer than a bag o' feathers. The 3 skids you need are standard on some model years, though possibly not yours, someone with a facelifted XJ might know. Don't think you can get them from the dealer anymore, so have a look on the bay or maybe someone like 4WD do them? When I looked into the skids for my WJ, it was about £325 for the set.
-
what year & model xj you got keeko??
-
Its a 99 ,4.0L Ltd
-
right, then it wont have bugger all as standard!!!
early ones (like mine) were fitted with steering, transfer case & fuel tank skids as std equipment
-
KD's right. I have a 99, and they don't come with any underbody protection.
-
Bugger all as standard. Whey hey!!
-
I'm guessing that's 'Bugger!!.........All as standard'
and not............'Bugger all............as standard!'
In which case, you're a lucky, lucky Bastard.
-
either that or hes missed the point or "bugger all" means summat totally different north of the border......
-
For `bugger all as standard` read `excuse to buy stuff`
Seeing as the original query has been resolved and I`ve had some good advice it`s about time somebody took the piss
-
Try Rustys off road for the plates
-

There is somthing about the smell of drying woodland stuff on a Jeep exhaust.....

Superb KD, thats what I like to hear. I take it the skids from the older XJs fit the later model? Talking about woodland burning Stew, it`ll be a smell I can see myself getting used to

I think I've got a burning smell, but mine hasn't been offroad recently.
Started on friday after a long drive back from Bristol. It may be the brakes not sure yet may have to get the wheels off today and have a gander.
I can neither locate it easily nor describe it so I guess a forum is going to struggle with assistance
:?
-
I remember the missus driving my car out to my work one night and she hadn`t put the handbrake 100% off. The smell would of choked you.Could be a 100 things. Is your jeep an auto or manual diesel?

See the "Fried the aircon" thread
