Title: Jeep WJ 2.7 CRD engine clatter
Post by: macabethiele on February 25, 2018, 10:17:17 PM
Our Jeep has developed an engine clatter at idle speed sounds like a loud tappet with another strange noise that comes and goes at the same time. Not sure if they are manual or hydraulic valve lifters on this engine.

When cold it sound quite noisy from outside the vehicle it will mostly disappear when the engine gets up to temperature. When re-started when hot the noise is usually absent but will return when cold.

Any pointers please it does not sound like a timing chain clatter in my view though I could be wrong.

If it's a chuffchuffchuff sort of noise, it'll be an injector seal. Lift the plastic cover off the top of the engine and have a look.

Hi thanks for the heads up  yes the other noise is a chuff chuff sort of thing !
Local garage suggested an engine flush type of additive  first followed by an oil change I will ask them to check for injector seal as you have advised.

Does a leaking seal cause the tappet noise or is it two issues ?

Refurb at a Diesel/Injector centre is your best bet.

New, you'll have to sell a kidney first.

Mind .... you also need new washers and NEW stretch bolts otherwise it's money down the drain.

It's usually just the sealing ring at the bottom in the head. A fiver's worth of bits, but a shit job to do if they're stuck.
